That's pretty cool TBH.

But I hope those were garbage sale, pawn shop finds, etc, or at least cheap knock off brand tools that went into this work of art. Not that it matters to me either way, just that it would seem such a waste if not.

Don't know if I'd want to be reminded of how I lost all my tools in a fire every time I sat around one.
If so that might help me feel a bit better about seeing them like that though.

It sorta reminds me of Stonehenge.

Pliershenge.

This is probably Photoshop-ed. The idea is pretty good on the top. But using the pliers as legs are pretty dumb and extreme.

Kinda neat. The tool polisher's are all cringing.

I've picked up plenty of pliers that laid in the dirt for 20+ years. Would work great for this, they just end up in the scrap pile otherwise.

i think it looks kinda cool, but i question if it's sturdy enough.

it looks heavy already. imagine it overflowing with wood. that's a lot of stress on those little welds on the "crown" spikes. and also the legs.

steel that's lost its HT bends pretty easily.

The person who made it says he's been using it for 10 years...

Reverse image search found it in a day old reddit. Doesn't solve the 'why?' but yields a clue.

That reply wasn't posted when I saw the pic. I feel about 100x better knowing these were likely seconds or scrap. I couldn't imagine doing this with new tools.

Without having the facts, all that comes to my head is giving new meaning to the phrase "money to burn".

I see what you are saying, but think you'd use it more like a fire basket with smaller pieces of wood loaded on end periodically versus like a fire pit where you load it up and let it burn.

Man. I could only afford the 3 knipex I have thanks to my student loan, and the stimulus checks. I feel like crying.

You can save the tissue for later. ;)

If you read the whole thread you'd see the person who's firepit that is originally posted the pic on reditt and he lives in Germany and when someone ventured a guess that the person who made it probably works at Knipex and that it was probably made with tools that didn't pass QC and were otherwise going to be sent to be destroyed he replied "nearly correct :)". My hunch is he didn't necessarily work for knipex but perhaps for recycling company where the rejects get sent.

I only venture that because I work in US automotive manufacturing and we've for a looong time had a problem with our scrapped parts showing up for sale on ebay or whatnot, and they couldn't have come from anyone in our plant as it's not wholly unlike Fort Knox in that respect, but we had no control over what happens once the truck from the recycle company picks up the dumpsters, so now we have a guy that pretty much all he does is deal with parts that failed inspection and couldn't otherwise be reworked and he cuts them up and/or drills holes and such in them to make them more obviously no good before they are allowed to go in a bin.

That's a great idea. Destroying rejected parts.

For a company with Knipex's reputation destroying rejects is a way of life and vitally important to prevent defective tools getting into the market and impinging upon their reputation. All high end companies do this. I can only imagine what Apple's scrap heap looks like.
