I have a project where I need to fix something on my car. I need something around a 40mm socket. No one know for sure so i was planning on getting the knipex pliers wrench. I could not find for 100% what the maximum jaw opening was for the 10 inch pliers. Could someone grab a photo with a pair of digital calipers between the jaws so that I would know if it works. My preference for the 10 inch is because the local sears by my house has 1 in stock and none of the 12. Thanks.

They actually have written the minimum and maximum on the back of the face or at least the pairs I have do! Believe 10mm goes up to 46.5mm but let me confirm that

The listing on Amazon says 1 3/4", which works out to 44.45mm.
But what sort of torque are you expecting to need for this? That's a huge nut, and unless it's pretty loose, I'm not so sure you'll be too happy with the 10"

Its weird the metric listing is higher than imperial. The 6" says 1" or 27mm which is obviously not a direct conversion either...

And I agree with Rlitman if your trying to remove a 40mm nut that is tight.... the plier wrench are NOT the tool you need lol

To be entirely specific it is to loosen the adjuster nut on my steering rack on my Miata. It shouldn't be tightened to ****** hell but it will be tight. I think the service manual calls for 50ft lb on that particular bolt.

same reason why they list the size as 10 inches and the length says 250, not 254. or 9 7/8

because 1 inch and 27 is easier to put than 1-1/16th and 27mm

Aw ya makes sense, its just weird they didnt put 25mm or 26mm. As those are a closer conversion to 1".

right, but, realistically it could be closer to 27mm, and the 1" was the compromise right?

i have the 10" pliers wrench and i haven't bothered to check the literaly max opening. but i'd be willing to bet the metric measurement is more accurate as it is a knipex tool.

Absolutely. That does make sense, for a second I forgot everyone doesnt use the imperial system... which is actually me, just so used to it.

honestly i wish we all went by the metric system, conversions and everything is so much easier.

also, if you want to really rack your brain, imagine how they all feel when they have to use purely metric fasteners on everything, metric sockets, metric wrenches, metric lengths..... and it all gets stuck on to ratchets with 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" square drives.... hah
