Knipex Snap Ring Pliers 8 pc set - Is It Complete?

A long time ago, before the internet, I used to do work on water pump motors and didn't know snap ring pliers existed. In retrospect, the main tech at the shop knew about that tool, but people kept stealing tools so we always would run the bare minimum and always used needle nose pliers and a flat head screwdriver to remove c-clips.

Even though I haven't done that job in years, I still encounter an occasional c-clip and wound up buying channellock snap ring plier kit with detachable tips. It's okay but not great.

I want to upgrade all of my tools in 2018 and in reviewing old threads here, it seems like Knipex and Snap On are the two best snap ring plier sets, with Knipex seeming to be the winner in many poster's eyes. Given that I don't work in a shop that tool truck guys stop by weekly, the lifetime warranty of SO doesn't appeal to me much. I think Knipex also offers a similar warranty and just as easy or hard for me to use with no weekly truck service.

Also, I love knipex pliers in general and this adds to my set of orange handled tools.

My main question is - is the 8 piece set complete or are there missing ones from it? And if so, does Knipex make them or is another brand necessary? I did some reading on sites other than Garage Journal and saw reference to many specialized versions of snap ring pliers that look like small pipe cutters with a wheel you turn to open and close the tips. I assume that falls under the category of "wait until you need it to buy it" whereas the 8 piece set is a good all around general purpose kit? Or is even the 8 piece set overkill?

My problem is I wind up finding c-clips on random things I take apart like a dial combination lock, so I don't know in advance what size I might need. And I don't know if there's more than 8 industry standard sizes. Also, I assume the knipex 8 piece set is really only 2 different sizes, but in straight, angled, and internal/external versions. So that might not be enough.

For the most part, external seems to have served my historical needs since it always seems to be a c-clip around a shaft I have good access to. But I haven't done much auto work.

There are 3 main sizes I come across as a tech. I don’t know what they are exactly but to me they are small medium and large. Very rarely do I need the large set and the Snapon set I bought only has the small and medium so I had to get a pair of cheap ones for the larger snap rings. Really I’m. It a fan of the Snapon snap rings pliers. I want to upgrade to the Knipex at some point but i can’t justify the price for the Knipex when my Snapon do work and I need other tools. If I were you I would Just get the Knipex set and keep your chanellock because I think the chanellock set has the larger tips Incase you do need them. And if you want a dedicated larger set in the future Knipex does make them individually I beleive

I have also been looking to upgrade my circlip pliers but am unsure about sizes. My cheap universal pliers with changeable tips don't go small enough. Knipex look to do five sizes.

I see a lot of circlip pliers are described as 6-inch, 7-inch which is no help at all.

I got the knipex 8 piece, the ones with piano wire tips.
They are definitely not "complete". I come across smaller circlips and larger.
But thats working on all kinds of industrial equipment/lab equipment.

At the risk of being off topic, I needed some snap ring pliers that would handle a wide variety of types of rings found in machinery. I bought a Channellock 927 retaining ring pliers set:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TG80SY/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I have used it a lot on everything from extremely tiny inner & outer snap rings (less than 3/8" diameter) in Dumore flex shaft handpieces to 'standard' inner & outer rings 1"-3" diameter.

It has a lever to switch from inner to outer ring mode (so that the spring holds the jaws open vs. closed) and comes with a pack of extra jaws/tips in different shapes, including straight & right angle tips.

That's a lot of plier for $22 shipped prime... might be worth adding one to your box to cover more types of rings.

My one complaint is that the interchangeable tips are small enough that one could potentially lose them, but that's not really a complaint...

OP, I feel the same way; the replaceable tips versions aren't the best.

I need 3 sizes kinda like Sommech describes.
I bought the straights in the 3 sizes from a SnapOn driver. They are convertible from outer to inner.
If I ever need the 45s or 90s, I will manage for the time being and worry about buying them later. It sounds like you could do the same.
