Got a project coming up that involves. Utting a lot of ⅜ steel rope and need a set of quality cutters. Looking at either the Knipex or the felco offerings. I cut bike cables daily but am going to need to cut a few hundred or so ⅜ cables for a project.

For a few hundred cuts of 3/8 wire rope, I'd be looking at something like this:

I haven't used the Knipex or the felco ones but I've cut hundreds of cables with the Morse-Starrett type and I think they are over kill. They would be slow. You need to spike them down to a stump and use a sledge hammer then open them and feed the cable through again which would make cutting that many very slow. I'd consider a zip disc on a small angle grinder 1st. You can wrap the cable with tape 1st then cut so the cable doesn't splay.

If you go Felco, you'll need C12s or larger. They're great, but they're quite expensive compared to the Morse/Starrett style "hammer operated" cutters. It's a tradeoff between convenience and cost.

I've cut lots of cable with a zip wheel and a 4 1/2" grinder. A wrap of tape prior to cutting gives a very clean cut and it's fast

I remember many years ago my son came home and he lost his bike lock keys; the only thing I could find was a cordless grinder with a thin cut off wheel. I don't know about you but that thing cut off that large lock in 2 seconds like it was cutting through butter. Makes you wonder about all those fancy bike locks and how good they are ?:dunno:

I have both the cutters and still grab the old grinder...

Nothing gets past the death wheel.

Even the best, thickest, hardest security chain will only last, at best, a few minutes against an angle grinder. Cheaper ones last less than 30 seconds.
