Absolutely not true!! It has to do with the style of the head on the pliers.

The nose is a little more rounded, as opposed to more angular.

Looked in the Knipex catalog for info on this. First pic is the style shown on Woot as "New England style"; Knipex calls them "American style." The second pic is closest alternate in the Knipex catalog which they call Combination style. The head is shaped differently and the griping surface on the flats is different. The "American style" is cross hatched while the combo style has straight ridges. They try to show this with the small illustrations below the head of each type of plier.
