I bought a High output 6.0 battery a year ago and was not happy with the price. I see various prices on ebay, all appear to be in original packaging, but some can be $20 or $30 lower than some others. I'm not talking about the obvious "equivalent" batteries which may say "lithium" instead of "red lithium" etc, those are obvious fakes and are dirt cheap. I thought original packaging might be a guarantee that it's actually Milwaukee, but I had a quick look on Alibaba, and there it is - complete Milwaukee packaged batteries for $38 in 1000s.

How the heck can you tell if a battery NOT sold by an authorized dealer is actually a deal or a rip off?

Thats easy, if it is not at an authorized dealer it is for sure a phony, if it is at an authorized dealer it may be a phony.

Maybe Milwaukee should make a tool for that.
Milwaukee doesn't but those gimmicky powered scissors things actually work great for them pesky clamshell packaging.

Ryobi, Skil, Worx, & HF sell em, others too I'm sure. I've wanted to try one but I haven't been able to convince myself to buy one. I feel like like it would just sit in a drawer & if I did need to use it I would forget I had it.

I would automatically assume a battery not sold by an authorized retailer is a fake and will burst into flames at the worst possible moment. I want the best possible quality control on my lithium ion stuff, there's a lot of energy stored in that space.

Lol, whoops, I uh, open packages with a utility knife I found in the truck I bought.

Or a swiss army knife if I'm in the living room.

Komet! What are you doing responding to the original question? You should be going on about packaging and scissors.
I answer your question with a foolproof method of guaranteeing authenticity and this is the thanks I get? Tough crowd.

No, you didn't. I told you these are ebay batteries. How are you supposed to judge the difficulty of opening a package from an ebay picture?

The spokesperson for the Vancouver Fire Department was on the noon news today warning people about knock-off batteries. The FD has responded to many fires caused by these batteries. The spokesperson said E cigarette batteries have exploded and caused structure fires. The not approved not OEM rechargeable E-bike batteries are the worst for failure and fires. There is some questions about insurance companies not providing coverage when the batteries are not CE .

I have taken a beat on phony eBay batteries (Dewalt). Buyer beware. The thing with phony batteries is those that are manufacturing and selling them are trying to deceive. They are hiding behind their ability to make a battery that looks exactly like the original and is just functional not necessarily a battery worth using. Other outfits that make replacement batteries under thier own name, like say Waitley, I am sure there are others, are relying on their own reputation not subterfuge are certainly worth a look over an eBay deal that looks to good to be true.

I THINK I recall that some have called Milwaukee and gave them information off the battery to confirm authenticity. But times are different now, and the fakes are getting better and better (at deceiving, not at working well).

Manufacturers don't seem to care. A couple years ago I paid $450 (?) for a DeVilbiss Prolite from an authorized dealer, there are fakes on ebay for $70. I emailed DeVilbiss stating the obvious, that junk guns not only devalue my "investment" but sully their name. No response.

Same with Leister plastic welders, Leisters DIY product line called (stupidly) Weldy go for around $300. There are many fakes on ebay with identical looking packaging as well as the welder itself, going for $200. I looked on Alibaba, and you can buy them in volume for as low as $50 or so. Leister never responded.
