I visited one of my buddies at his place of business the other day. He owns and operates an auto repair shop not too far away. He has been at it all of his life. We yakked about old times a bit, and then he suddenly said, "Hey, did I hear correctly that you now collect old tools and tool boxes and stuff?"

Of course I told him that I do. He said he had an old one that was just taking up space, and offered to show it to me. It is old, and quite dirty, but looks like it might clean up very nicely. It is an "MBC" brand (Metallic Box and Cabinet, apparently). I am not familiar with the brand. Anyone know anything about MBC?

The 3-piece set is 60" tall, and 17" deep. I've forgotten how wide, to be honest. I didn't recognize the logo, but a close-up photo told the story.

There are a few scattered tools throughout the drawers, but not a lot. Most are Snap On or Cornwell; but again, only a few remain. It looks like it has never been cleaned, but I did not find any rust, dents, or damage. I'm wondering what it might be worth? Not sure whether I would keep it and replace one of my new Craftsman units, or resell it.

My friend is not the sort of guy to dicker around with the price. He is a good honest guy, and totally straight forward. I asked him for a price, but he told me to make him an offer. I know that if I offer a reasonable amount, he will just take it, and not say a word. If I offer too low, he will apologize but pass on the deal, and then change the subject. So I'm interested in the opinions of the Garage Journal gang.

As always, your opinions are deeply appreciated.

I had an MBC box in the mid 70's. It was a great box especially for the money and I was told by my Bonnie dealer who sold it to me, that MBC made many of the Mac boxes at that time. I did find out he was telling the truth. Anyway great boxes.

Metal box of Chicago is what I was told about 30 years ago. I have a very old box that I have had for 30 plus years. Well built but not fancy by any means. When I got it, the paint was camo. It had been used in Vietman and was U.S. Air Force surplus. Gives you a little history on where they have been used.

That box combo is bad ***! Better than any c-man. I would love to have that set. Please post pics when you clean it up. Super cool! Don't know what to offer.

from what oldtimers tell me, mbc use to make a ton of tool truck companies boxes back in the day. cornwell, mac come to mind. i dont know what happened to them though. everyone i have seen were people who stopped wrenching in the 70's. the last one i ran into had a mac top mbc bottom and they looked almost identical. so i am nto doubting they made them for mac.

I have to say those would make a really nice stack to look and perform well in anyone's garage! Depending on what size and age your Cman ones are, these could make a good step up in quality and cool factor in the tool storage department. I know I would try to pick them up!

i havent seen an MBC box in a long long time, they were very well made boxes back in the day.

i'd clean em up, and put them to good use.

Here are some pictures of a Cornwell box I bought that had a MBC sticker on it. I believe someone once posted that MBC had made the Snap-on KRM series boxes.

The Vulcan box I have was made by MBC, it is a nice well made box, equivalent to the Snap On boxes of that era that I have had.

I guess 250-300 sounds like a reasonable price. Not a low ball deal, but not too high either.

I missed this thread before, thanks everyone for the info on MBC tool chests.
These tool chests look too good to pass up, so if I happen to see one....
