Looks like a specialty tool where the guts can be removed and adapted so that a nut could be ratcheted on to a very long threaded rod or bolt. It also can be adapted to drive hex sockets or conventional 3/8" sockets. It is stamped "Taiwan" but also has markings of a Texas tool company. I couldn't find much on the internet. I don't have it in my possession, so I don't have a picture. Interesting looking thing. I tried google and ebay without much luck. Anyone?

It does the same thing as the more modern versions of the pass through sets. I believe they were made in the USA initially, but then contracted production overseas. I could be wrong though. I have a partial set somewhere.

I have a set. it was the first "pass through" socket set I ever saw. I bought mine off of the Matco truck many years ago. Pretty nice quality for an import. I will get a pick tomorrow.

Funny you ask that! I just found a set I purchased in 1993 sitting in my toolbox. The early versions used a clip to hold the socket on, and that clip fell off. I emailed a couple of old distributers and asked for some advice, and they essentially told me they closed and no one would honor the warranty. Lifetime seems to mean life of the company, not life of the tool anymore...

It was the appearance of quality that drew me to it. Also, near as I can tell, all the original parts are present in the case cutouts. I think I may be able to get it for a couple of bucks since, with the parts disassembled, it kinda looks broken. I'll watch for the pictures from you guys for a comparison. Thanks. kr.

Sears sold them for a while. They were in last year's catalog, and used to be carried in a few of the stand-alone hardware stores.

This picture is from a Google search, but from a cached page.

As with "metwrench", it was a fad that went away when ratcheting wrenches got better. Wait a year or two and it will come back. I saw "Robo-Grip" pliers as a new thing recently.

Got 'em in SAE and metric, don't think I've ever used 'em, not even sure where they are at the moment. They do seem well made and I'll ditto the belief that they were one of the first ratcheting pass-thru socket sets offered, beating by a number of years the Matco Special Forces and Armstrong Eliminator sets. Have they followed the O-Ratchet into discontinued tool purgatory as well? Haven't set foot on a truck in ages.

Here is the O-Ratchet I got a few days ago. Forgot to post it. A little bit different from Bigpigdave's. I couldn't pass it up for 3 bucks.

See any patent numbers on these ratchets?

The other side of the handle has 3 patent numbers on it. "U.S. Pat 13002, 4520697,4602534 and says ''Taiwan" just below them. The label inside the box says it is distributed by Summit Tool company in Denton, Texas.

To anyone that has one of these: what is supposed to hold the shifter button in place? Mine has come off and I don't see how to attach it so that it doesn't just fall off.

I posted about about this 2 weeks or so ago. Sorry I can't find it on my iPod Touch right now. I bought mine from Sears back in the early 80's. Mine has SAE & metric. Used it once and put it in my tool box, found it about a month ago, forgot I had it (how sad is that).

Here's my trouble, Ratchet with selector in place, but not secured:
oratselector3.jpg

selector switch removed, guts visible:
oratselector1.jpg

and, the switch flipped over:
oratselector2.jpg

How should the switch be secured in position? What kind of fastener is used for this application?

The Mac did not have a selector switch, you flip the socket wrench over. The socket wrench uses special MAC sockets .

i fixed a selector with this problem with JB WELD! looks like that one was used as a hammer more than a ratchet. its not missing any parts...its just broke.

I know it was cruel to keep you all on the edge of your seats over this, but I think I have it figured out. When the previous owner was using the ratchet as a hammer, the pin which holds the selector in place was unexpectedly forced through the opening of the switch plate, reaming the hole and allowing the plate to slip easily over the collar on the pin. I think I'll stick it back together with some sort of space age adhesive and move on. RayJay, thanks for the pics; if I'd have taken a closer look at my own ratchet, I might have figured it out earlier.

Mine is stamped Tiawan on the underside of the handle, along with 3 US patent numbers only. No foreign patent pending number. On the paper label inside the case is an address and phone number for Summit Tools Inc. in Denton, Texas. It's an 800 number and it says to call for warranty service or repair parts. Huh, maybe I'll try that.

what was the result from calling about the warranty? did they honor the warranty, or send replacement parts? I'm curious because I have the same ratchet with broken parts.

I also have one of those Summit Tools ratchet sets and I really like it.
Recently the ratchet started acting up - slipping while releasing bolts.
Anybody know if there is a repair kit available for this ratchet - its exactly the same as the one photographed here.
