If it came from a jewelry shop, it was most likely used as a polishing wheel motor. The name plate characteristics are close to my old grinder, which dates to the 1930s.

It had an old flap buffer wheel on one side and a smooth little wheel....almost like a round stone you would use on an axe. I took apart and cleaned it out. Its a single phase and just hums along. I just realized just now the I left out one of the washers,that runs along the shaft to oil it, out. Found it on the darn floor. Guess I will just have to crack her back open one more time. Ugh.
This is a little better pic of it. I think it might be time to replace the sleeve bearings in it. It doesnt make any strange noises but seems to have a little play in the shaft and it has side to side play in it also. Say I wanted to replace the old felt covered wires off the stator (4) of them, could I just cut and soldier new wired on? Only one side of the motor case comes off. I tried to get the stator out to clean behind it but could not get it to budge. So it only opens up to see the centrifugal deal and can pull rotor out but thats as far a I could get.

I wouldn't mess with it. Side play is a non-issue, as the motor will self center when running due to the magnetism, and the lack of any other axial forces. If it's not making noises, just lubricate it and use it.
