Hello all!
New to the forum and have a question/request to start things off. I just picked up a Kobalt Model 221565 60 gal. compressor from Lowes for a great price. Only problem was that it's missing one of the capacitors, which I've determined to be the start capacitor (one on the right when looking at the end of the motor with the thermal overload button on it)

Motor is AO Smith p/n 7-194160-01. Price for Kobalt p/n capacitor is crazy ($160.00). I'm sure I can cross it to something else, but I don't have the vendor p/n or ratings to search for.

Based on all the postings, it looks like quite a few folks have this unit, could someone be kind enough to disconnect power, remove the cover and post a pic of the label on the start capacitor? Or if someone already has the info, that would work too!!

Thanks in advance

You have 30 days to exchange it, and 90 days to return it for a full refund... don't put up with stuff that's not perfect from the factory, take it back and get one that you don't have to mess with.

Givl, good point but I knew what I was getting into.

The reason I got it at a reduced price ($200) was because of the missing cap. I could buy the OEM's cap. and still save $$, but I know I can do better than that.

Call Smith and ask them for the specs on the cap. Don't tell them what it is on. Should be <$15 at grainger or what ever your local industrial supply of choice is.
Should be something like 115v ~200-300 µF

Here is the parts list for your compressor:

dschwarz's Kolbalt compressor...

This manual cross references the A.O. Smith part numbers:

Manual with Kobalt-A.O. Smith cross references...

Start capacitor: A.O. Smith PN 16230135 (Kolbalt PN 166-0055)

Run capacitor: A.O. Smith PN 17586325 (Kobalt PN 166-0120)

At either of these places, the OEM start capacitor will set you back $65:

Kobalt start capacitor OEM Source 1...

Kobalt start capacitor OEM Source 2

However, if you download this parts list, you get a spec for for the 166-0055:

Cross reference parts list:

166-0055 CAP, START, 161/193 (MFD)

Spec'ing that out at Grainger, you come up with this replacement:

$15 DAYTON Start Capacitor, 161-193mfd, 220-250 V, Rnd

And here's the same item from Amazon...

Of course this assumes that the replacement will physically fit under the motor cap. If it doesn't, you could consider mounting it remotely-- perhaps with wire ties.

You could also play around in the: Grainger motor capacitor cross reference master page for other close matches.
