I bought the 26 gal quiet tech kobalt compressor from Lowe’s back in January, and up to now it has been great. It has not seen a lot of use due to me being extremely busy at work. If I had to guess I would say the compressor has ran <10 times since I bought it. I always unplug it and back the regulator off when I’m not using it, and it has always maintained the pressure in the tank. I went out today to use it and noticed the tank was depressurized. Plugged it in and let it build pressure and when it kicked off I heard air leaking from the regulator. I fiddled with the regulator some with no success. So my question is should I deal with Kobalt customer service, or maybe buy my own regulator and put together my own manifold? It will be next week before I call them, but what do you guys expect me to hear from them?

I've had the same type problem with compressors and it turned out to be the unloader valve leaking through, sometimes they get gunk in them and stick open a little and the air is routed to the regulator assembly to a bleed hole for normal bleed off after compressor shuts down to bleed head pressure.
the regulator has a plastic "piston" in it with an Oring. I bet either the piston or the o ring is leaking. I have rebuilt regulators by swapping a piston from a new regulator to avoid messing with the plumbing end of things. there could be a pc of crud in the seat where the piston seats too .

I bought a kobalt compressor about the same time, might even be the same model. The safety release valve on mine was the wrong one for the unit and would release the pressure at about 140 while the compressor was still running up to its max of 175.
I called customer service and they shipped a new one out to me. Actually, they asked me if I wanted to schedule a service call, but I told them I’d be happy if they just shipped me a new valve. For some reason it didn’t go out th first time. I called back a week later. The lady was very apologetic and overnighted it that time. I believe it was a fluke.
Call customer service. I think you’ll be pleased.
