Kobalt series 3000 tool boxes?

On the website it says the locks on these tool boxes can be rekeyed to match your Kwikset house key. I was looking at the key last night. It doesn't look like a Kwikset key. How do you go about re keying the lock? I haven't bought a box so I don't have directions to look at. Seems to me this would be a handy feature. Also if you have one of these boxes are you happy with it when loaded with tools

Same as all their smart key systems..

Insert original, turn 90 degrees, insert smart key tool, remove tool, remove original, insert new key, and turn back 90 degrees.

Certain Master padlocks have this feature as well

I have several Kobalt boxes and love them but I have not messed with the keys. Three of the 2000s are in use as workbenches. The drawers hold lots of weight and slide easily. I like the lower deep drawers and use the grinder bench drawers to store my Tormek and also 8" grinding wheels.

I just picked up a 3000 stainless and use it for misc tool storage--Milwaukee tire inflator, cordless brad gun, sander, multitool, etc. The top shallow drawers hold instruction manuals for storage. The wheels are nice and glide across the floor.

Lowes has been closing out this line and replacing it with Craftsman. Most of the 2000s were less than $250 and the 3000 was a deal at $149. If you can find one in your area in the $200 range, snap it up. You will be pleased.

Thanks for your opinion. The 3000 series bottom box is still 479 in my AO. They're selling though. I'm a little OCD and like it much better if I had 2 or 3 of the same tool box. Right now I have the Milwaukee roller base that was on sale a couple of years ago. I also have the 50 dewalt top and bottom box. Not to pleased with that one. I'll probably sell it if I get the Kobalt boxes or us general.

What if my house keys are not smart keys?

As long as they’re Kwikset, it’ll work on the toolbox. The tool unlocks the pins so you can reset them to fit your house key.

There should be a tiny slot next to the key slot where you insert it.



Make sure you follow the directions or you’ll lock yourself out and won’t be able to reset it.
