Does anyone know how the Kobalt trays compare with the Harbor Freight ones, sizewise? I ask because I have the HF stuff, and I have to arrange them goofy to get both SAE and metric in the top drawer of my box (HF 44"). Thanks in advance.

Here is how I fit them in the top drawer of my HF.

I tried and returned the HF trays (both older red and newer black) because they didn't fit my impacts. When I saw Steevo's thread in the tools section, I bought 4 sets of each type (long pin/short pin), and ended up keeping 2 of each.

Just saw this sale in my Lowes today and came to the 'Hot Deals' forum to post. Seems someone has beat me to the punch. I bought the Hanson ones years ago at (I believe) ~$12 per 3/8" rack. I got the SAE & Metric racks for quarter, 3/8", and half. Love these racks. Absolutely love them. Considered buying these at Lowes so that one day I'd fill 'em up in my home tool box. Use these everyday at work and they're fabulous. For $10/3 rack set, buy 'em up.

I stopped by to glance at these a couple of times, but for a variety of reasons decided they weren't the right storage solution for my main tools. Then I started thinking about how they might be handy for sorting the tons of mismatched extras I keep around in case I need to make up a specialty tool for a specific job or something. I went back to snag some today and they are down to $5 at my store too, glad I waited.

Off of 55/Loughborough?

Which style? The lock thin pins or stubby short ones?

They were marked full price in tool isle but had them marked at down to $10 at entrance at my store yesterday.

Yes, the Loughborough store. A manager at the one in Maplewood was pretty rude to me once, so I've been avoiding that one. Which store are you using? Something they all seem to have in common is a screwed up inventory system, the last two or three times I've gone I had to have a manager adjust a price for me, including for the trays. There's a big aisle display with $5! stickers on it 10 feet from the register and they all rang up at $24.99, which is especially baffling since they've been marked at $9.99 in the same store for weeks. :headscrat

I believe these are the short ones; i.e. they don't protrude from the sockets and have a hex shaped bolster at the base, correct me if I'm wrong.

I just picked up a second set (Fractional and Metric) at $9.99 per. I had to go to two different Lowes in order to achieve this. I had to dig to find the fractional set. The manager could not believe the price either. I almost considered buying everything I could find and putting them on E-bay for double price.

Brunswick Maine still has them for 9.99. They are the kinds with the shorter pins. But my 3/8" metric impacts won't fit, not enough space between the pins. Anyone know if the longer pin style will fit impacts?

one question? Do they have the odd sizes like the hanson's has, not sure I want to have to buy a bunch of odd sized sockets just to fill up the pegs? Please let me know. Thanks Rich....

The old, long pin version, are the exact same as Hansens except the id numbers are on the base. The new, short pins have the same sizes as well.

This is the reason why they are so nice because the old ones are so similar to Hansens and a quarter the price. I think this is the reason for the dramatic redo and price change because they were literally exactly the same.

Im thinking of scraping/melting the numbers off of mine. Redoing the sizes with stickers or white paint. Making the trays fit my sets. I need to grab some more before they run out.

I am just not sure about these, I know, or rather the store mgr. knows me at lowes and I am sure that I can get these at the sale price, I have my sockets on the metal racks now and I think I just have a lot of sockets and I am not sure I can fit all of them back in the drawer if I put them on the trays.

You might be better off making custom socket holders out of plywood and dowel rods. just measuring and drilling.

Found some today at my Lowes in the tool section. Only some had the markdown tags, but had the same item numbers as the ones that weren't marked down. No visible difference in packaging. They scanned at $25, but came down to $9.99 when the cashier keyed in the item numbers (338540 SAE & 338541 metric).

How are these with impact sockets? Looking at a set for my Craftsman Industrial close outs from a while back.

All my IR impact sockets fit great on the 3/8" & 1/2" trays, and my Gearwrench 1/4" impacts fit on the 1/4" trays just fine too.

I'm very tempted to grab a set...but I know I will never use them. The Hanson's have spoiled me, and I won't use any other...

I just bought two sets today. They were $4.98/set of three. I like them better than the HF ones. The HF do have the writing on the top which I like better, but the Kobalts ascend from left to right which is more important to me. Also the Kobalts are slightly shorter than the HF ones allowing me to put the 3/8 and 1/4 next to each other in my drawer.

I just purchased a set of each and selected store pickup. $10.76 total. Thank you very much for the heads up.

These things are awesome. I got two sets of each.
6 and 12 point, shallow and deep, in both SAE and Metric. All in two drawers of the box, much more space efficient than what I had before.
