kobalt tools customer service (allegedly)

I have a 40" Kobalt tool cabinet that I bought in 2000 when I started as an auto technician at a Pontiac dealership. I used it for 6 years in the field then got a bigger box. Most of the slides are shot even though they were US made ball bearing slides. Recently i decided to buy new slides and use it again, I went to Kobalt's site for customer service it directed me to Lowes' site. After fumbling around trying to find the right link to send out, I received a reply the next day telling me to call a specific # for Kobalt tools. Why it was not just on Kobalt's site is stupid. I called, waited an average amount of time and was helped.I explained to the rep that I needed to order new slides. He asked for the box part # to which there is not a tag on it with one, I even took the drawers out to check. He then asked for the # of the lock which there is none, he then asked what color it was, all blue i said. I told him there is a part # on the slides, he did not seem to care. He did not have a clue as to what box I had, he asked me to google a picture of it and email to him. Top notch when the customer service department has no clue what tool box their company sold in stores that year and ask the customer to google a picture of it to send in.

I'm not surprised. They're sitting in front of a PC, and without the part #, can't be of help. On the other hand, they SHOULD have been able to look up the slide #..

I was told by a snap on guy that they made their boxes at first. I hope none of my Kobalt tools break because I bought them when they were made in the US. Now i would get the taiwan replacements. Not that they are bad, I am just a guy that wants my tools to be all US made if possible.

LOLZ.

Snap-On made Kobalt boxes?????????????

Srlsy. LOL.

C'mon.
Reality check.

And I own a Kobalt box.

Check the owners manual for a part #.
Most of that stuff, like HF, changes vendors and part #'s so much it's not a repair item. Been down that road for a box that needed parts.

Owner manual will net you a part #. But repalcement part or availability is not a likley ending.

They are "turn and burn" boxes.

BTDT.

tool box was only used for 6 years, When i bought it I did not have life long expectations for it. I was just starting off as an apprentice at 19 and could not afford the commercial brand boxes. especially when I found out that payments for them were more than my car payment.

I did not believe it either but he was sure. I do not have the owners manual anymore, it is strange that it does not have any manufacturing labels just the warning sticker.

I have made a habit of printing out a label with the model number and serial number (if applicable) of a toolbox and sticking it to the bottom of a drawer or under a drawer liner. The stickers on the outsides of the box usually get scraped off or worn away until they are unreadable. Having the spare tag makes finding the model number easy.

So.. it sat collecting dust not moving at all from 2006-now?

Sure of what?
My Mid 2005 Kobalt box has a Craftsman badge on it from the previous owner.
Labels? ha.
It's a home owner box as marketed.

No owners manuals a big downfall.

Slides long gone from mfg/.
Lock long gone from mfg/.

Fab/mod time. Trust me.
Again. BTDT.

Top notch when the customer service department has no clue what tool box their company sold in stores that year and ask the customer to google a picture of it to send in.

So the only information you could give him was that it was a blue Kobalt box about 14 years old, and you are expecting him to figure out what box you have?

I think your expectations are a tad high! :dunno:

I think his picture idea was great, you need to do that.

I doubt that Snap-On customer service would fare much better without more information than the color of the box to go on.

I gave all my tool boxes I was not using to my Dad, he passed away a few years ago and I am getting them all out of Mom's garages.

The blue box is the one I need new slides for, the black box I bought in 06 when i went back to a dealership while I was waiting to get into the IBEW apprenticeship.

I realized that the next day
I am looking for a good Snap on KRSC46GP 6 drawer cart to replace the black Kobalt box. The blue I have tools like my nail and staple guns, routers, stuff like that I do not use as much.

I'll say one thing, I really like your blue box.

+1 on that! once i have room, i'm getting a box like that, probably not kobalt, but a similar setup. I like having a portable workspace of sorts like that.

Early kobalt boxes were williams made and carry a lifetime warranty, If you have a problem take it to the store they with either swap it for a new box or issue a gift card for original retail price

When did Williams stop making the boxes? I have a 2000 model 8 drawer Kobalt tower that has a couple of issues. I wonder if it was made by Williams?

Just called kobalt tools customer service again and got a very helpful person this time. I found my receipt of purchase from 2000 but not any owners manuals, gave her all the numbers I could find and she said that they have no information on that series of tool box just a picture. She also said the earliest they have had people call in about was a 2008 model. I called JH Williams and they said there system was down and to call back Monday and ask for .... I had mentioned the lifetime warranty on the product but she said they have no record in their system about that line anyway. She told me to try and go to the manager of the store with receipt and see what he can do.

Reminds me of when I sold aftermarket parts and had guys come in asking for shocks for, like, a 1976 Olds.

Well, which 1976 Olds, guy?

"I dunno, but I've been working on 'em forever and all the GMs back in the seventies and eighties used the same shocks."
