I like my kobalt set vs craftsman that I've had. I have the 300 piece set and plan on up gradeing the same way you are when I have the means too. Then my kobalt will become my home set.

I would go with the Kobalt set. I have a lot of Craftsman and just bought more on eBay to fill out my sets. However, when I need something new I am going to GearWrench and Kobalt. They are nicely finished and feel good in my hand. My local Lowe's carries the full line and I am expecting they will be around if I need the guarantee. Our Sears is depressing.
