I am currently shopping for a tool chest, I had planned to buy a Harbor Freight 44" roller and the 44" top. I was searching for some alternatives and found the Kodiak Pro Elite on the Home Depot website. A little more searching and I found it for sale at a few online retailers.

Its listed as a 41" chest. There are very few other details available. I haven't been able to find these sold in any local stores to get a feel for it. Has anyone encountered one of these in the wild and if so could you share your thoughts?

The unique design of the handle on it matches an International, so I'm going to wager that kippieland is correct.

Use the zoom feature on the photos at Sears, and you'll see what I mean.

Amazon has it for $760 with free shipping. I'm trying to find a similar model with more information available so I can confirm the drawer dimensions.

Well I got this combo and am pretty much a very happy camper. Home Depot had it for $799.99 ship to store free pickup.
It took three of us to lift the boxes into the truck. I never expected the weight.
I like the metal color gray rugged finish.
The wheels came installed.
The drawers almost seem to pull out of your hand when you have them almost closed.
100Lbs rated drawer slides are smooth enough but I can tell when a little weight & good lube is added they will glide much nicer.
The box sat on its casters flat footed on all four corners empty.
It looks like a SPG International but I could not find any credits anywhere.

If Snap-on and Proto and the others are out of your budget this is your box. And you will not be giving up much in the way of build and quality.

I'm going to call the 1-800 number on the paper work to see if I can get info on the maker.

Can you throw up some pictures of the box and a little more about how it's held up after a couple months?

One thing I really like about that top box is it has 6 small drawers. It helps offset the negative of those 2 gigantic deep drawers on the right hand side

Bottom looks just like the standard HF44", Pretty decent layout. I have never even heard of this brand till this thread.

Well, any pics I would post would not be much different than new. The box is in a pampered environment and does not move much so its not been tested but.

But I can say its a few notches above a Sears Craftsman in build quality, and to me better than a Kennedy, and the finish is one of the most loved features of this box.
I don't know what the name or term of it is but its not smooth, not rough, kind of black and gray, not flat, and not glossy. But its very tough. It would be hard to scratch.

When you look at Sears or other brands of the same size, the Home Depot price is another deal maker for this box.

I called the customer service number that came on the paper work of the box and tried to get the name of the mfg but no dice. Its a contract build for Home Depot. I forgot the real reason I called was to get a matching lock so one key would open both.

If you want a nice box but not in the Proto or Snap-on price range.

The color balance may be off a little looking more blue than gray.
When I purchased the box the finish was not even a remote factor. But the more I see it the more I like it.

What is this kind of finish called anyways?

I am thinking about buying one. Can anyone tell me how tall it is from the ground at the wheels to the top of the chest closed?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm only 5'6" and i like to be able to look into the top of my box, my last cabinet box combo was a high above eye level and i couldn't stand it.

Has anyone compared this model to like the harbor freight box or the menards masterforce. I am sitting on a hefty gift card to home depot and this guy is tempting. Was looking at the el cheapo husky for $298, but I have a feeling 5 years from now I would be upset for not spending the money for a decent chest up front.
I have looked at the masrerforce and us general boxes and like both of their constructions, not so much that husky.

From what I've read online they are very comparable to hf and menards. Based on that, i can only assume it's sturdier than the Husky junk. Husky, the newer lower end craftsman and the lower end kobalt boxes have really become the bottom of the barrel as far as cheap badged Made in China tool boxes go in my opinion. From my personal experience through trial and observation over the past 10 years the harbor freight brand us general tool storage hasn't lowered in quality (you can interpret that any way you want ) but almost all the big box retail hardware store brands have significantly gone down proverbial poop-chute.

Well I am going to try one out, ordered the top and bottom separate to save $20. Also had someone on chat who matched 10% off (couldn't match the full 20% harbor freight), brings the price down to around $700 before taxes. Will try and give a little more info as I am hoping this is a competitive box to the masterforce or us general boxes

Received the box last night. Idon't have a harbor freight nearby, but I would put the quality very close to that of the masterforce cabinets at menards. I noted that there is only one slide per drawer whereas the masterforce and hf model have the dual drawer slides on the deeper drawers.
Finish (powder coat) appears a lot better than that of the masterforce as well as the drawer arrangement. Really liking the color and the fact that it appears it will not get dirty easily.
The masterforce seemed like it would have some wasted space due to the drawer setup and the only areas of concern on the kodiak model from home depot is the right deep drawers serving a purpose and utilizing them with something that deep. I would have preferred to have seen 3 drawers on the right upper chest, but I will find something to fill those drawers.
The cabinet came preassembled and it was packaged well. I literally took it out of its shipping crate/base and set it on the floor and took the chest out of the box and I was ready to go.

I might add extra slides if the deep drawers need the extra support. I tried putting 100lbs of lead in some of the drawers and they still rolled with ease.
I will try and get some pictures over the next few days.

I know this is an old thread, but does anyone have any updates as to how these Kodiak boxes are working out for them? Amazon is now selling them with Prime shipping available. It seems like a good deal. I like the crinkle finish, like the old Harbor Freight boxes.

I am enjoying mine. The finish is a real plus. Its a great box. When you try and pick them up empty you will appreciate how well they are built in how heavy they are.

The only thing I would improve on are the casters. They are not a deal breaker but could have been thicker. But the cost of the boxes is another plus. A great deal.

No regrets.

Thread necromancy I know, but can anyone with one of these tell us how many bearing pairs per slide please? I'm trying to decide between this setup and the 44" HF.

The HF seems to have a slightly better drawer configuration and the larger drawers have two slides per side. The Kodiak appears to have a better finish and a nicer color. But is the nicer finish worth the extra $80 and loss of the extra slides and useable top right drawers?

No Double slides on any drawers. They do have ball bearings on top and bottom of the slides.

I have some loaded up pretty good and they open and close very smoothly and with you pinky finger.

The loaded specs may be on Home Depot's site. I'm very happy.

No Prob, Congrats on the new box.

My job just purchased me a Homak H2Pro (Black) 41 from Northern Tool. What a monster. The thing is huge. The layout fit the application to a T with the cabinet "BUT"................but the slides are barely adequate. Compared to the Elite Pro they are smaller.

Where the Elite Pro does not have dual slides, the ones it does have are larger than the normal single slides seen on many.
They are of thicker material, with longer row sections of a larger size of balls, and wider and taller. And they roll in and out with ease in comparison.

I did not appreciate them until looking at others. And every time I look at the finish I am glad I went with her.

Hello everyone,
I am trying to find a new tool box to go along with my newly epoxy-ed garage floor.
I am also strongly considering this tool chest.
Anyone have any more updates on the durability?

I also noticed that HD sells these pieces separately. Together, it is badged a "Kodiak", but separately, they are badged "Wen."
I understand that Wen is the maker of these tool boxes, but does anyone know if the colors are the same? I bet it is, but the HD website makes the Wen product look darker.

Thanks!

I like the tool box. I bet the colors are the same. I got them together. You cant beat the money. Some insist on double slides but these are sturdy slides.
Not a junk built box for sure.
You can't beat Home Depot's price or return policy. Free ship to store, maybe to home.
You can open the box and see at the store.
To get a double stack of this quality for 799? Nice.

I really liked the look of that Kodiak/Wen set as well and the quality for price is very good. In the end I went with the HF 44" because the draw layout was better for me and the extra 3" helps (just ask the wife :shocking:). The other big factor for me was that there are more add-ons for the HF. I actually went with one of the 7 draw end cabinets instead of the top chest. It add quite a bit of drawer space but left me the top of the boxes to work on (I'm sans a workbench right now :( ) As my tool collection expands, I can slap another 7 drawer end cabinet on the other side or their taller storage unit type cabinet... and I can still add the top chest.

Versatility, expandability and the ~$100 savings won out in the end for me.... but I do love the looks of these steely-gray ones! lol

Because the marketing makes no mention of where this box is made, can I safely assume that is coming from china?

I like the box.

Too lazy to look for the paperwork I Google and found a spec on Walmart's description of the Kodiak Elite "Country of Origin = Imported"
