I'm looking at possibly buying these today and I'm not familiar with these models. I do know they are slides and all slides on the drawers are smooth. Paint is worn I'm told but that doesn't scare me. This will be more of an extra toolbox set so it's not a need but more a want. What kind of money would you offer on these? I was thinking $300 myself.

I've redone two older snap on all the way down to bare metal so I'm not scared of a project but would rather just clean them up real nice and use them.

I would be real happy to pay 300 for those.

I have a very similar set and packed every drawer full of heavy tools tools. 15 -20 years later it is still going strong!

This size of box makes an awesome second box or a box dedicated to tools from one specific task (like full of all your auto body tools, or next to a lathe full of tooling, etc)

Finally, used snap on can always be sold again if you later change your mind. Because of this, if I see a snap on box I 'think' I can use, and it's a good price (or fair price) for sale, I get right on it.

Good Luck,

Gregger

Thanks for the response. I know I could always sell later but snap on is just too hard to part with. Should have never bought a snap on box....now it's turning into an addiction! :lol_hitti

I'd pay 300 for sure! I just bought a KR557H which looks very similar to the bottom box and I paid $250. Mine has all friction slides save for the bottom which is roller bearing.

I know what you mean. Unfortunately shop space forces me to sell something if / when I bring something new home. So now if I see something I like I ask my self if I like it better and if it is more useful than some other cabinet I currently have. If it passes this test I buy it, transfer the tools to it and try it out for a while..... then sell the old one.

It really is the only way to roll if you prefer vintage tool boxes more than new, and if you're on a limited budget. Waiting for the prefect box could take years, and in the mean time leave your shop without storage.

I call it "catch and release": If I catch a good one, I release the previous one... but I am always fishing for something I like better.

If I had the opportunity to purchase those for $300 I definitely would. I have seen a few for sale and people usually put them in the $800-1500 price range. Then again they have been for sale for a few months, and one set over a year. Typical case of folks over valuing their stuff.

I just brought them home. Paint is a little rough in spots but no rust or dents. The guy wanted $400 and we met in the middle at $350. Very happy with the boxes. Drawers are super smooth. Way smoother drawers than any new box I have. Also came with working locks.

Plan on getting it cleaned up this week. I will post pictures when done. I think my old craftsman roller and Montgomery wards rollers to the shed I plan on getting this spring. Better and cheaper storage for the shed than buying new.

Briandex,

I find comfort in the fact that I'm not the only tool box ***** around. I love your k-55 set up btw.

Hey thanks! I'd have a hundred boxes if I had the money and room. The way I look at these boxes are its as good as hiding money under my pillow. If I need to sell one day I will not lose money.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure the bottom drawer on the bottom is roller bearing. Does this sound correct? I'll have to go look at the year codes.

I just had the bottom replaced, still available for warranty from Snap-on.

Quick question and I even hate asking but if you have a drawer in a snap on box that looks worn thin in the middle, willl they replace it. I can't tell completely but it looks like something was spilled in the drawer along time ago that ate through the paint and even thinned the metal. If I leave the drawer liner in you don't notice but with it out I think over time I could push through it.

Reason I would feel bad even asking is I bought the box used so I don't know what happened to drawer. Just curious. :dunno:

Probably not because I don't think that would be considered normal wear and tear (unlike the slides). I was able to buy a few new drawers for my KR660 which is the same age as my KR 557 so it is possible that you could get a new drawer from Snap-on.

The drawers were $250 a piece :scared: but my dad bought the box from his Snap on dealer. He worked a deal with the dealer to split the cost in order for my dad to buy the box (because he wasn't going to buy it with two bent up drawers.)

Wow!! Looks like my drawer will be fine then! Lol. That only $100 less than what the whole deal cost me!

You scored big time there. I have that setup along with the three drawer middle box. No way would I part with it. ;)

How much does the three drawer box cost usually? Also if you could tell me the model number it would be much appreciated. Looks like I'm gonna be hunting for a middle now! lol:rocker:

I think it's a KR-547. The top is a 537 and the roller is a 557. Those three drawer middle boxes are very hard to find. When I went to buy the 537 I was lucky that he had the 547 too, so I bought both. If you can get one in good condition in the neighborhood of $200, you're doing pretty well IMO.
