Long story short I need a new tool box cause someone broke into my garage and stole my old one. I found a kr1000b kr1200 combo kinda local and the guy is pretty firm on $3,000. Not sure if it's a good deal or not cause in my area pricing on these is all over the place, from $500 to $4,500. From the pics they look to be in excellent condition for being made in 1990. What do you guys think?

Too much for something that old IMO...

Update your profile so we know where "your area" is and maybe someone can help you find something.

Pics always make something look better than it actually is most of the time.

Little high, but if is mint it's awful close. Those boxes are TANKS, and Accuride is outstanding at customer service. They have sent parts for all my KR boxes slides with no issues.

Only way I could see $3K for that setup, if it has all 3 boxes (top, bottom, side) and was super clean, ready to use. Even then I think it would be a long sell. Most people that are spending that kind of money on a box are working professionals that rely on their tool box for a living. Industry has really transitioned from the top/bottom setup to a more common, bottom only setup with deep top drawers.

When I started wrenching the kr1000 was the best of the best. I never really liked the big top drawer boxes. If I was to work in a shop again I wouldn't hesitate to spend $ 3000 on a mint kr1000 with a kr1200. I'd probably be overpaying by $500 or so but I see guys spend 3k nowadays on a hutch or cart without batting an eye.

It's a 70th anniversary box, doubt that really adds any value but would make finding a side box almost impossible.

Around here...a KR1000 in mint condition is a 2500.00 box.

For 3000.00 you're not going to get a better toolbox. Offer him 2800.00

Condition is everything. And the KR1000 is a tank. I have had 2 of them at least. Got $900 for one that was a bit rough, $1400 for a decent 70th anniversary.

Because of no large top drawer, they are hard to resell. The later boxes with only 1 large top drawer are getting hard to sell. Young techs turn there nose up at them.

Now as far as $3000, that is high. And without seeing it in person, you really can't tell condition. I have seen great boxes look bad in pics and bad boxes look good. 70th anniversary adds no value but doesn't detract in value either. In real nice shape, I think I could get $2000 tops.

Last year I saw a KR1000 in good but not as nice as DJD's go at auction for $1000 out the door. With 8 hours of scrubbing, waxing and lubing it still wouldn't have been as nice as that one.

People seem to love these KR1000's. That one is in very good condition so you'll have to pay for it. Waive $2500 cash in front of him and see what happens.

Edit: DJD, I see you're in Chicago. Big city means bigger prices making whatever deal you make that much better. That's a lot of box for $2500. But to me it loses its luster when I see $3K.

I'm gonna go look at it. If it turns out to be **** I loose a couple hours of my time, oh well. Anyone know how to pull the drawers out? Are the slides like the new boxes with the latch on each side or do you need a special tool like the old friction slides?

Two screws on the front, then drawers lift up and out of slides.

Remember, they are Accuride and they stand by them. SO may not warranty newer boxes with SO slides if you are not original owner. That's another plus for the old KRs.

Has Accuride warrantied the entire slide for you or just parts like detents?

Go there talk to him in person and check out the box in person and find as many flaws as possible and show them to the seller.. Show him cash in hand and you will be surprised what people will do when they see cash money.. Offer him 22 or 23 and you will haul the box for $2500.00 good luck..

They will only do detents and other plastic/rubber parts. They make you go to SO for the slides. SO will send you new slides but they will not be Accuride, they are not nearly as nice.

Detects, but based off the guy I have talked to every time, their reputation, and their warranty, I would expect no problem replacing the whole unit.

https://www.accuride.com/en-us/resources/quality/warranty

But have you actually done it? I have asked and they only will cover parts. A replacement slide has to come from snap on. Hence why I asked what your experience with them was. To me it reads that they are only replaced for the initial purchaser, which in this case is snap on. Not sure why or if even snap on changed slide vendors. :dunno:

That has been my experience as well. Do you know who currently makes their slides? They come out of Canada and Taiwan.

Box looks good in the pics but that really doesn't tell you much. That box is also not going to trip the trigger of a young tech so your competition for buying is slim. One question I always ask is have you had a lot of interest? Often they will say some low ballers or no not really. That sets the stage for your offer.

The other thing you have going for you is not many people have 2 to 3 grand in cash to make a deal. Trust me,,,,,,,,,,I know this from both sides of the equation. If the box is nice and the drawers work well, I would offer no more then $2000. And see what he says. As far as waving cash, that would do nothing but piss me off as a seller and a take it or leave it attitude would cause you to be shown the door. Now saying cash today, right here and now, is a more acceptable ploy. You never want to denigrate your seller or buyer. Far better to have them feel you are making your best offer whether buying or selling. A soft approach works quite well for me whether buying or selling.

I offered him $2600, said its all I could afford right now, he countered with $2900. No thanks. I found a krl1022 for $2500 and a triple bay for $3500.

What did the box look like in person?

Tell him the offer stands until the end of July. That give him a whole month to think about the cash while the box is sitting there doing nothing. If he doesn't get any more activity in a few weeks there's a good chance he'll call you back.

I didn't go see it, I called him, didn't feel like driving 3.5 hours if there was a possibility of turning around empty handed.

This approach worked for me when I got my KRL1022. Seller wanted $3200 firm plus $100 to deliver in his cargo trailer. I politely said I was very interested but all I could afford was $2500. I made sure he had my contact information if he changed his mind. To my surprise about a week later phone rang and he said he'd "let the box go" for $2700 cash. Told him if he delivered I was agreeable :)
