KR1000 Secret Compartment

I am cleaning up an old KR1000 for renewed life.

Does anyone know the history and purpose of that secret long compartment under the top mat?

And secondly, why is 20% of it blocked off? I removed the fixed cover, and the way the lock tabs are aligned, it could be configured with the blocked off part to either side.

I did search the archives, and wider google, but came up empty.
Thanks,
Wayne

It's most likely a place where you can lockup your keys/wallet while you work - some Craftsman cabinets have one draw that locks, for the same purpose.

It was designed to put ur lond 36in prybar and long extensions in it. If you bought the matching top box it covered that up. But they incorporated a full length drawer into the top box so it didnt matter

The area where the fixed cover is was there if you wanted to mount a vice on top of the box. They made it so you could mount it at either end of the box by moving the fixed piece over and sliding the flip lid the other way.

Thanks, you guys are a wealth of information. I appreciate it.

To Dan: Sorry, I didn't mean to ruin anything. If you are sincere, I will see about getting the thread removed. Let me know.

The one on the KR1000 doesn't lock separately, it locks when you lock the drawers so it would be no better to keep your wallet in there than any drawer beneath it.

If you bought the matching top box it covered that up. But they incorporated a full length drawer into the top box so it didn't matter

Yes, the KR1200 would cover it. The KR1100 (also has a full width drawer) isn't as deep and allows full use of the compartment. FWIW, here's a pic of my KR1100 sitting on top of my KR1000.

Looked at a KR1000 / KR1100 combo today. The condition was on the Ok side, but when I checked for the secret compartment no luck. The bottom box was a KR1000A. Did some boxes come with out the secret compartment?
