Hi All,
So getting ready to finish off the ceiling in my garage.
We are talking 2"X4" trused roof, 24" on center.
So starting with the insulation, I thought I would go with R-21 fiberglass kraft faced batts.
Here is the question, having never done any type of insulation do I get 23" width faced batts? My assumption is that each side has the paper "ears" that I can staple to the bottom cord of the truss, since the actual cavity is only 22.5" wide.
Am I even close?
Thank you.
Jeff

You will find a batt option that is "to fit" 24" wide cavities and the ears or flaps will hang past that to allow you to staple to the faces of the lumber. Go to home depot and look at what they have. I like long rolls vs. batts because it means less **** joints.

Are you planning to hang drywall or anything? If so, it'd be easier to hang first then insulate from above. Especially if you can do a blow in insulation.

R-21 won't fit inside the 2x4 section of the truss, if that is an issue...meaning if you plan to have any storage or floored space above it, you'll only fit R-13.

Otherwise, 23" batts are fine.

Oh cripes, I did not catch that this was in a ceiling. Batts are the inferior way to insulate an attic. For crying out loud, blown in cellulose or even FG is cheaper, faster, easier, better since it fills in all those gaps, and better since the cellulose acts to limit drafts like a secondary air seal.

It is also much easier to get high R-values like R-50 since you just keep blowing.

Be sure to maintain ventilation in the attic area.
