Ok, I've been lurking around here for a while now. I've shown bits and pieces, but it's time to show off some of my progress in the last 5 years. LOL

Overview:
We built back in 2004. Money was tight finishing the house and everything else, so the garage got put on the back burner. Got built at least, but no finish work. I'm 30 years old now, and I've done bits and pieces along the way as money has allowed.

We are located on close to an acre lot in a small country subdivision close to the lake that was made back in the 70’s, but is only half the lots are built on. Everyone has an empty lot between houses. Covenants are pretty relaxed. No homeowners assn or anything. Everyone gets along and it’s a great place to live.

The specs:
30 x 56 x 10’ tall pole building RC brand
2 10x8 overhead doors
1 16x8 insulated overhead door

Floorplan:
Front section 30 x 24 deep, parking garage. ( 2- 10 x 8 doors) Hers
Rear shop section 30 x 32 with bathroom in back coroner. (1- 16x8 door) His

Uses:
I like to think of the space as very multi-purpose.

As my signiture says "Jack of all trades, master of none" I'm into almost everything, except hunting and fishing. Welding, basic woodworking, computers, fabrication of all types. I love taking used stuff that is laying around and fabricating it into something useful.

As much as I love to work on stuff, I also like to have a few brews with friends. Of my group of friends, I was the first to own my own place. So we host lots of parties out there.

Watch a game, listen to some tunes, whatever!!!!

More details to come as I try to find all the pics that are scattered on different computers………….

Looks like a nice setup! Exactly the same size as mine, just a different approach. Looking forward to seeing more...

Her Side: The parking/storage garage 24x30

Her side is exactly that: Storage for all the **** that would normally go in the basement. (We don't have a basement) I opted for the big garage over a basement.

Big enough for two vehicles and the tractor in the middle. Notice the large shelf (4x8) above the garage door, that's for ALL the Christmas decorations. I've got a space between the garage doors to store odd scrap wood. Also behind the grill is my rack to store odd plywood and insulation scraps. I've got some shelves to store **** that I don't use in the shop very often.

Right now still just a rock floor. Sometime I'll get some concrete in there, just not a big priority right now ($$$$$$$). 9 compact fluorescent for lighting does just fine.

Note the garage door in the wall separating the garage side from the shop: If you notice there is no door track yet...... I wanted to still be able to use the whole 56' length (keep a trailer hooked up, ect). I got that door free so I figured what the hell, it's not hurting anything, and some day I'll get around to putting up the track and getting it to open.

On to his side:

Insulation:

Insulation has gone in stages. There was no insulation anywhere when the building was erected.

First stage:
I put 1.5” Styrofoam in-between the purlins on the sidewalls. R-6 I thought this would be good also to keep the other in-wall insulation from touching the outside tin.

Ceiling put ¾” foam up against the roof tin. R-3 (To keep the roof tin from sweating and dripping onto the attic insulation)

Since this has been a work in progress, the first stage of insulation has been plenty for the furnace to keep up and make it nice to work in the space.

Second stage:
Stud out walls even with the posts. 5.5”

Blow cellulose in from the top. R-19 There is some fiberglass where I couldn’t blow.

Third stage: In construction
Drop ceiling to bottom of rafters and blow cellulose R-40

So when I’m done:
Walls: R-25
Ceiling: R-40 +

Should not freeze in there even with no heat at all. Then my furnace is gonna be oversized, but we’ll deal with that when the time gets here.

More pics to come..........

Fast forward to now.......

Krager’s Redneck Kitchen:

Still in construction, but functional. Everything is donated or hand-me-down. Basically if it’s too nasty for use in the house! LOL!

· Convection oven
· Microwave
· Crock pot
· Pizza cooker
· 2 deep fryers
· Ice maker (Thanks to a good buddy)
· French fry cutter
Beer frig

I’m working on making some cabinet doors to keep the dirt out. And a new countertop, the cheap shelving worked for a while, but it’s getting nasty.

More pics to come as I go around the shop..........

Bar:

Here's my fold up bar made from old barn siding. Nothing too fancy.

But does your bar FOLD!!!! This one does. It is 32" wide and 10.5' long. I didn't want it to block the shop all the time, so I made it fold up. (It hardly ever gets folded up cause it's the hang out point, and has the garage internet computer on it) LOL! If you look in the pics you can see it folds at the wall and then folds in the middle. The pulley is just below that light above the cardinal sign. I don't have a pic of it folded. I need to work on an electric hoist for folding it, haven't gotten around to that yet.

Wireless network for internet and music:

I have some knowledge of computer and wireless networks just from stuff I’ve learned on my own from work, and the internet.

The shop hosts 2 fulltime hand-me-down computers:
1. The internet computer located on the bar.
2. Music computer located in the back cabinet above the file (tool) cabinets. Has external usb hard drive for music storage.

Wireless router (dd-wrt firmware) in the house with high gain antennas broadcasts the signal to the garage. With the metal siding the signal is hard to pick up. So I used an access point in the shop with a yagi antenna to pickup the signal from the house. From there it travels on Ethernet to another wireless router that serves the shop with wifi so friends can bring the laptop to the bar and surf.

I mapped the network drive of the music computer in the house so all the music is available in the house also via the network.

I can also control the music computer from the bar computer (or any computer on the network) via pc-anywhere software.

10/10 for your resourcefulness.

I love your whole setup.

Recycling is the way to go.

I never considered just keeping a floor as stone to offset the costs of other more important parts of the build, like a roof.... great prioritising.

It also helps to have a wife, girlfriend, partner who understands.

Nicola calls me Orinoco Womble , you can Google that

The new house Nicola and I plan on buying in August is owned by a guy who installs networks etc, and the garage is wired to the house etc as well.

He also has a video surveilance system for CCTV outside the house and in the garage that he can access from anywhere in the world via the web, clever stuff I understand very little of.

Here is a few thread links containing a lot of recycling and use of discarded items.

My Teardrop trailer build:
Loads of recycling to offset the expensive bits.

Industrial sewing machine that only had domestic use before, will be used when I upholster the inside of my bus, and also the Teardrop trailer

One of my favourites, loads of recycled stuff in here, from backfill soil, to timber and garden ornaments.

A push scooter I built from mostly scrap last year, includes working video.

I like your projects grizz, I love to take parts, pieces and make something worth while. Sometimes people think I'm crazy for some of the stuff I come up with, but in the end the project is usually a success. Although there are some failed projects, but what the hell, usually all I have invested is a little time.

Bathroom:

I wanted a simple bathroom (5'x7')with wash sink and pisser. We also had a spare set of washer/dryer, so I made a spot for that also.

Wash sink, (laundry sink)
Pisser
Washer
Dryer
12gl Hot water heater (just enough to wash a load)
Oil filled radiator for heat

I heat this space all the time, of coarse. I keep some paint and other stuff that shouldn’t freeze in there also.

I don’t use the washer and dryer a lot, but when I do it’s handy as hell. Washing work coats, coveralls, shop towels, towels from the lake, ect. All the stuff the wife won't allow in the house.

In-wall Storage:

While framing, I thought I should use some of this big wall cavity for more than just insulation.

My in-wall storage system:
· Basically you get triple the storage out of the same space. Those are little elevator buckets out of an old feed leg at work.
· I use this area for odd fasteners and small parts, paint, cleaners.
· Handy cause it’s close to the work bench.

Some pics with it open and closed.

Here's the scaffold I just rigged up so I can hang the osb on the ceiling. I used a trailer jack and some telescoping tubing on one end. The other end I'll hold with my head, or make a "T" kick brace.

Now I need to get motivated and get it done.

Finally some progress on the ceiling........ Almost done...... now if I could just stay off here and actually work I might get done!

I'm glad I recessed the lights. It was a pain in the *** and lots of extra work, but in the end it will be worth it!

The area above the heater will get white tin put up in that area you see. The heater is pretty close to the ceiling, so I want something with fire rating....

My Homemade exhaust system:

Just got this finished, yet to test, but should work perfect for what I want!

Took an old furnace fan and mounted it in the attic.

Inlet: I built a box around the fan, with a slide through the ceiling in the middle of the garage for exhausting welding fumes. Also there is a tile running over to that register that is located over the kitchen area to get rid of grease smell when we fire up the deep fryers.

Outlet: Exits through some large tile to the non-heated side of the garage where I can just open the garage doors to let the fumes out.

Pics:Couple pics don't have the sides screwed onto the box yet so that you can see the fan.....

So have you registered your bathroom with your counties LEPC (Local Emergency Planning Commission) for the hazards involved in the chemical storage in there? We have plenty of those types of labels at work also, but I hadn't ever thought about doing something like that, nice wallpaper!

Stealing the exhaust fan idea. ;)

My only concern I guess would be using the right fan with the right gas. I mean having an explosive gas running across an electric fan could be bad.

Either way I like the idea and research here I come.
