Curious about the geothermal system.

How many bids did you get and how far apart were they?

What is the payback time or is there a state/national incentive?

I got three bids, they were all within a few thousand of each other. I did three options within each company for the bid process. I wanted to know what it would cost to:

• replace two natural gas furnaces and two ac units, leave hvac ducts alone
• remove two natural gas units, change hvac ducts to one unit, and get one larger natural gas furnace/ac
• remove two natural gas units and two ac unites, change hvac ducts to one unit, change to geothermal with one larger geothermal unit

There is a federal credit and a credit from the electrical utility company. 30% of the cost of the system came as a credit from the federal govt, and so the extra cost of geothermal made it closer to the cost of not getting geothermal installed, and so it was easier to make the jump. The payoff is around 10 years I think. I'm keeping track of it to see how it goes. We aren't planning to move out of the house for many more years than 10.

Here's the layout of the new place from overhead. This is an older satellite image, the shop isn't in the picture for example, and some of the landscaping around the house is a little different. But whatever... Close enough

The shop is a few years old now, but it's generally an open slate

Yeah, I moved from White Bear to Afton last summer. So it's kind of an old update, but one that I haven't really updated on here. So, most of the changes on page one and two until November of last year of this thread are the old garage. After November the posts are all at the new house. Been slow to keep the updates coming.

I shared a spreadsheet for vehicle calculations on GJ at the following thread link. I've had this spreadsheet built for a long time now, and have updated it now and then. There are a couple pages/tabs inside it, and it does fuel mileage, gear ratios, tire sizes, speed corrections, simulated 1/4 miles times, blah blah blah, lots of math, blah... I've left my own vehicle in the spreadsheet as an example of how it works. Delete all the info that's there in yellow boxes, and put in your own:
