Krl box problems?

So my buddy and I both picked up a couple SO KRL boxes. Mine is a 1022 and i forget his model number bt it has 1 more bank and is about 3 inches shorter. Anyway, has anyone had any problems with these boxes lately. Mine seems to be fine for the most part, but I do have a couple drawers that have a little more resistance when opening and closing than others. Also I had one of my drawers not open fully... about 2 inches shy. I had to pull on it a little hard to get it to go, then it worked fine after that.

My buddies box has almost all stiff drawers compared to mine. and most of them dont open up fully without it binding in the last couple inches or so. Again, after you give it some muscle it will open completely and work fine for a day or so. If you put your weight on thew drawers, they seem to close a little smoother. Lastly, his box has a stainless top that doesn't sit flat. Its lifted on 2 corners and the top wobbles if you push down on either corner. We havent bolted it down yet but I dont think the two bolts supplied are meant to hold it down as much as just keep it in place.

Both our SO dealer and a rep have seen the box and said it needs a month or so to break in. Both boxes are new and my 1022 is way smoother than his.

Anyone got a tweaked box from SO lately?

I've had my 1022 for several months now and I don't have any problems with mine. The drawers have broken in since I've gotten it and I can tell a difference from the drawer I hardly use.

Some of the new slides are stiff and work well with a lot of weight. Pull them out hard and see if that helps

I got a problem with my KRL too, Snap on doesn't know where the F it is and it was supposed to be delivered last monday, my dealer can't get any answers from anyone. I ordered it 5 weeks ago, snap on said delivery time of 2 weeks, my dealer said realistically 3 weeks, it was supposed to be delivered in 4 weeks according to snap on, but I'm on week 5 and I can't get a status update about anything.

Any ideas mrshaun?

I've found that you need to exercise all the drawers a few times. Some weight will help. Afterall, the parts are brand new. A very small amount of light oil also helps. Heck, in 3 or 4 years you'll have forgotten there ever was a slight drag.

As above, put some tools in the drawers and use it. That box is like a fine shotgun, it needs to be broken in and used a lot. After being opened a few thousand times, it will be a lot smoother than it is now.

Where's that great Snap-on customer service?

Something here isn't right. Ball-bearing slides should be silky smooth from day one - if they bind it's because the glides are not installed parallel in the same plane to each other - putting weight in the drawer and exercising it until it wears is just a substitute for poor workmanship and is something I would expect from a China made box - not from a top-of-the-line USA made Snap-on branded box! After all what if I want to store shop towels in that drawer?

The SS top that won't sit flat is tweaked (either it or the box it's sitting on) - it will never lay flat - playing the waiting game with it is time wasted.

You paid a premium price for these items and expect them to be made to a much higher standard - why put up with something that isn't perfect - demand a replacement or a full refund... actually if I were you I would take the refund and buy a box from elsewhere, you can get excellent quality boxes at a fraction the cost of the Snap-ons... it just won't say "Snap-On" on the nameplate. :)

A couple of drawers on my 1022 box have done the same thing. One side wouldnt open all the way. I gave it a little force and now it works just fine. Some of the drawers ame a funny noise when the it opens about half way and switches to the next set of sliders. I looked at replacement sliders but it was around 100 bucks a drawer.

the box has all the tools in it already so weight isnt the problem. Even if I had 1 wrench in each drawer, I would expect arguably the best brand toolbox you can buy to open and close smoothly. My HF service car slides 10X better than this this.

SO also gave him 2 warrantied slides so we replaced what we felt were the worst 2. Still not much of a difference. In SO's defense, they said they will make it right no matter what, even if they have to replace the entire box, however they want him to use it for a month or so to see if it gets better. I dont see this thing "wearing in" but we will see. Ill keep this thread updated.

if the thing is empty it will be tight.
you want drawers that will handle whatever the load is. so if you do sheet metal work and you load every drawer down to the max you know it will handle it.
do you change your shocks on your 1 ton truck because it rides rough? no you load that thing down and keep driving.....

What about Kennedy box's? I would change the shocks to a better staging set with resovoir so there wont be any fading!

Thanks, JASTECH

The top drawer of his box has all his air tools, chrome and impact 1/2 sockets and breaker bars. Id estimate about 100 lbs in tools. My box has maybe 75 lbs in the top and its much smoother.

Holy cow a 1024! I've never seen one of those, even at the Snap On tool shows.

I just passed on an 84" Epiq.....and I'm wondering if it was a mistake right now. Hopefully Snap On EC will have a good promotion going again here in the next few months.

I don't get how people operate out of small box's, i'm like 6 months into serious wrenching and my kra2411 is overloaded, and thats just in 6 months of real wrenching.

I understand that. My Macsimizer is stuffed right now. I was thinking I'd do the 84" epiq and then hutch/locker later on.

I wish I'd have done a triple Macsimizer a few years back, but oh well. Live and learn.

Something about the epiqs doesn't do it for me. I'm still attached to the KRL's. If you were looking to upgrade this past EC rebate was the time to capitalize on. 2k over 10k coulda traded in your box and got a hell of a set up.

With my trade I was in the $700 rebate group, but yes it was a real good deal, timing just isn't right for me personally right now. It was a very tough decision but I played it safe and passed for now; my dealer seems to be a pretty good guy so when another good promo comes up I'm sure he'll let me know.

But a new toolbox would be sweet.

If you have a Snap-on box that's got drawers that don't open easily, I would bet the slides need to be cleaned, and re-lubed. Even if it's a new box, there's no guarantee it wasn't sitting around for a while before making it's way to your garage. Grease gums up with age.

Take the offending drawer out. Use a rag soaked with WD40 to wipe out as much of the grease in the slides as you can get to. Spray a little at the bearings. Work the slide back and forth untill it runs freely. Then spray some spray grease at it, trying to get mostly the bearings and tracks. Wipe away any excess, and re-install the drawer. When I do this to older S-O boxes, I usually do a whole bank at a time, that makes access a lot easier. This process usually makes any S-O box drawer work beautifully....no matter how bad it works when you start. If this does not fix it...its time to send the slide back to Snappy for a replacement.

Speaking to box size, I used to be in a little itty bitty kennedy, and I was going to upgrade to a bigger box.... the dealer really wanted to talk me into one of those KRA roll carts with the flip top... after talking to a lot of the old timers they said to buy as big as possible so I looked for a used KRL.. found a 7022 and am very happy I did because I'd already be out of space

Little update. We replaced a couple slides that werent pulling all the way out on the long top drawer and it seems to be better. We also went ahead and took one of the stiffest drawers out, cleaned and lubed all the bearings with some marvel oil and worked it in. Seems like this is the major problem because the drawer slides smooth as silk now. We are going to do the rest of the box when we have time, and Ill probably do the same to a couple slides on my box that are a bit stiff.

As for the top, it has been a couple weeks and still hasn't flattened out yet, so thats going to have to get replaced. I do see it getting any better,

Snap-on needs to fix the top, no question about that. I'm curious about the slides though. Does anyone know if Snap-on has started using a different lube on the slides? I have had problems like this but only after a long period of time when the lube picked up dust/dirt and started binding.

My box, a KRL has had a few stiff drawers since I bought it 7-8 years ago. I replaced the slides hoping it was that and it didn't make a difference.

I don't really notice till I use the C Man Pro box my friend has. About the same size box and it's almost like going from a friction slide drawer to a ball bearing drawer between mine and his!

The SO rep said they were maintenance free slides and never need to be cleaned or lubed, but I would rather clean and lube them myself once a year than have stiff drawers.

I have noticed that the slides are a little stiffer than in the past, but once the weight is inthere they are perfectly smooth.
you do need to get that top replaced.

My new KRL slides are a little stiff too, but after owning it for a few months now, they are loosening up and becoming much smoother. They seem to be made to a very tight tolerance.

The locks on both my 7023 and 1203 were a bit stiff at first too but have also smoothed up a lot.

In my two 72" drawers (with a ton of weight in 'em), if you don't get your hands out of the way when the drawer is closing, It'll jam your hand/fingers real hard. Already done that a few times....

Can somebody post or send VERY SPECIFIC pictures on how to get KRL1022
slides to release from Cabinet/Box.

We had another thread a while back, but I never did succeed.............

Thanks,

they should just pop up and out. I used a plastic trim tool and a little bit of leverage to get ours out. I believe there are two tabs pointing down( so you have to pop them up) and one in the back that faces the rear of the box. ill take a video next time i take one out.
