KRL failures

A post in another thread got me thinking, what failures of an SO KRL series have you guys had? I have had a 1022 for almost ten years and the only problem I've had was a grease zerk poped out of a caster, Snappy replaces the whole caster no questions asked. My box is loaded heavy, has a Kra 62c road chest full sitting on top and locker collecting more **** everyday. Just wondering what has failed and how well the lifetime warranty servered you?

not really a failure, but my original KRL1023 had a defective table top that was pushed up a bit from the weld between the 2nd and 3rd bay, which caused my stainless top to separate from the wood it was glued to.

the box definitely would have been fine for yrs to come, but SO swapped it out for me after some back and forth with the regional..

I've had a few KRL series in full time working shop use over the years since 1995. No failures, just dirt built up in the slides making the original box a little stiff to open drawers on the box belonging to the shop. I haven't had time / motivation to clean 'em up since it gets treated like **** by everyone in the shop. All of my personal ones have been traded in at 3 to 4 years old. I might have long term test on my current 1022 / 1201 / 1012 setup since I hope to retire before I can fill it up.

Nothing has gone wrong yet but it is only 8 years old. I'll let you know in another 20 years or so if anything has happened (if I can still remember anything that is).

Have a krl1022 that had the anodized drawer fronts.. Well the fronts wouldn't stay on and two drawer fronts came apart at the spot welds after some talking (6 weeks) snap on decided to send me all new drawers and two casters had developed flat spots the rep also replaced all 4 casters so my experience has been good and a ton of lock and roll latches

The brakes on my krl722 never did work right but other than that, no issues.

I have replaced a few slides. Most of the time, the slide could probably just be cleaned. I have seen a couple of paint problems.

I did get a new KRL1022 that was warped somehow from the factory. We didnt notice the issue on the truck, once the customer got it we noticed the issue. I got the box replaced by Snap-on with no problems. All it took was getting the Business Manager out to personally see the box.

The drawer slides don't move as nice as I'd like them to but at the same time I bought the box used. I have one drawer that doesnt "lock" (meaning I can just pull the drawer open... I dont have to pull the "slide" underneath the lip of the drawer to open and close the drawer. Basically theres little issues I have with my KRL's but overall I can't complain. If the issues Heavy Metal Doctor and I started are the ONLY ISSUES I'm a happy camper!!

i has a KRL1003 which it was in Body Shop for like 15 years before i bought it as used to have my KRL1203 mounted on it.

most of slides could be clean and lube BUT my previous snap on guy had rather to warranty it.. i only had replace where the slides are too serious stiff.. but mostly i had cleaned up and use it.

i had to bought a swivel casters to install middle of KRL1003 to beef up the weight load and help the bottom box to better sitting than just 4 casters... i bought direct from Faultless caster factory as much cheaper than snap on...


my KRL1203 had dropped down by tow company as tow driver did not his job so it was tow up on flat bed, top chest was roll off and cause lot of damaged> the tow company bought a new one for that tech. the tech gave it to body shop guy, the body shop guy had it fixed and straight out much as he can. so he decided to sell it and i bought it after 2 month of trying to sell . i got it for 450 dollars and took it to my work. so far it is look like bang up BUT it do make me a good money and investment as it is paid off right after i bought it... i am still glad that i did it!!!

Had to replace one of the plastic sides that lock the drawers... Which he made buy for 6 bucks since I got it used and not from him

I have 1 or 2 slides in my 1003 that have lost some of the ball bearings. Not sure how it happened but I found a few sitting in one of the drawers one morning. I haven't bothered to warranty it yet as the missing bearings aren't noticeably detrimental ...yet.

simply a very well built toolbox.

not my boxes but i do service them as needed:

krl-661 needed 2 drawer slide kits. rusting along the bottom edge all the way around the bottom. for a box from 1995, it sure has had almost nothing done to it other then a monthly wipe down.

road chest (the older one with the small drawers on top). have not done anything to it since i bought it 6 years ago. everything functions as it should. drawer slides still work great.

3 bay krl with 2 full length top drawers, i think it is a 2008 model, replaced one plastic drawer keeper for the lock n roll. flawless in my book considering everyone in the shop opens it like 30 times a day each.

my kr1000 appears to have all new drawer slides in 1996 (date stamped). lock and wheels look original. stands the test of time for being the first krl type box in 1987. i should mention it needs all new drawer detents (broken off laying under the lowest drawers.)

I have a KRL 1003 that has a broken plastic drawer latch. I haven't looked into whether that is a warranty item or not.

Drawer front spot weld broke on my KRL1023 after 4 years. They replaced the drawer no problem. Paint even matched perfectly.

Two 1023/7972/1018 cab/hutch/locker combos, both racked/warped and top drawers had to noticebly pushed on to closeOne was so off the drawer hit the cabinet when closed). Big flakes of paint came off the hutch flange, and the inner edge of handle of full locker.

All built June/July2011 timeframe.

My 3yr old 1022, zero issues. 12yr old 761a, zero issues.

Curious about EPIQs, thinking about an 843 Powertop.

843 powertop is the triple bay all drawers right? I got one in May '11 and it's been perfect so far. Seems like alot more space than a 1023.

Curious about EPIQs, thinking about an 843 Powertop.

My bottom drawer on my 90th anniversary epiq wasn't bent/welded correctly on the front. It would contact the drawer below. Dealer swapped it out no problem and had the new one in a week. No other problems though.

On the broken drawer lock issue mentioned - I did have one broken buy some dim-bulb who just yanked a drawer open with more force when it didn't roll right open on the first pull - snapped the little catch off the end amd made that a free rolling drawer for while. The SO man had new plastic lock peice on his truck and gave me one for free.

One KRL triple I bought had a warped SS top. The problem was that the original owner never bolted it down. I had to go quite a bit overboard with screws to get it flat again but it turned out OK. While I've had several of these that had the top just sitting there unfastened, (the top is so heavy, you tend to think it's not necessary to bolt it on), this is not ok. You MUST bolt your SS top to the box to avoid damage over the long run. Especially if the box lives in an area not fully climate controlled.

Yeah. Oh yeah, it is, def bigger than a 1023. And the EPIQ lockers are MASSIVE I cant wait to pull the trigger on a setup. Was thinking about Lista because they are really well priced but they dont offer lockers or toolboxes deeper than 24" drawers in their technician series.

I've had my KRL box for 2 years next month and it still works and looks as food as the day chadster1 dropped it off. I think it was money well spent on a box. I still need to get my stainless top for it

The last box I had to warranty out was a 1975 smaller box that the spotwelds had broken and it was leaning to one side.

Top drawer doesn't seem to be completely "square." Right corner is not flush with the corner trim and sticks out about a 1/4'', as the left side is sunken in about a 1/4'' as well. Also, left side slides will not stay fully extended when open and retracts into the box 1-2'' when open. Anyone ever experience this?

It needs to be fixed. Snap-on shouldn't have a problem making it right.

I helped a buddy replace the slides on one of his drawer the other day. I'd have to ask him what number his box actually is. It was a full width drawer with his hammers, prybars and a **** ton of punches.

I buy and sell many boxes. I've replace some slides, cleaned and lubed lots of them, replaced locks that have been drilled out (key lost, not SO's problem) and had lock and roll latches break and detents wear out.

So overall, almost no problems!! I'm not a big fan of lock and roll, but that is just me.

Really like the old KR1000's, very tough box!!!

Same thing happened to me on my new KRL7022. Took my Snap On guy one minute to straighten out the drawer. The one side of the drawer wasn't pushed all the way in, in relation to its runner. You just pull the drawer all the way out, then maybe back in an inch. Then pull toward yourself on the black plastic U shaped tabs on the runners, releasing the drawer itself from the runner. While still holding the tabs out, have someone pull the drawer almost all the way off the runners (not all the way!). Then just gently push the drawer all the way in & re-check.

If that doesn't solve problem, your box is still under lifetime guaranty, at least according to my local Snappy dealer--unless you drive a car into it or something!
