KRL1001 vs MB2010 - Are these both about the same?

SO KRL1001 has an asking price of 800 with no negotiation available. Mac Tool MB2010 has an asking price of 1100. Both boxes are missing one lock and the snap on is missing the locking rod but is otherwise in good clean shape.

The SO has fewer drawers at 12, and the MB2010 has 19 drawers.

Are the build qualities on these two boxes about the same? I haven't seen an MB2010 in the wild to feel it for myself. This one is just the bottom box. I did look at the SO and it's pretty nice and reasonably heavy built.

MB2010 is a Matco isn't it? Looks like it's got a bunch of little drawers if you like that sort of thing.

Matco from that era was good stout box .
What drawer layout works for you, that an important factor .

You know, I’m not sure what I like. I have a 19 drawer and it’s fine but things like my wrenches are split between two drawers because they aren’t wide. I do like a couple of deep drawers and a handful of thin shallow drawers for wrenches and such. The snap on has a lot less drawers but would allow me to put more stuff in each drawers rather than hunting between three drawers for the wrenches I need.

I’m a bit frustrated by pricing. These are old boxes and for the price they ask (and require) they shouldn’t have missing locks, keys, bent end handles, etc. 1100 bucks for the Matco MB2010 bottom box alone seems higher than Willie Nelson on snoop dogs yacht.

Some of these have been for sale for MONTHS, and the second I decide to speak to the seller about looking at it in a couple days when I’m there the seller instantly “has a guy coming out tomorrow”. It’s so wierd.

Any idea what a Mb2010 is worth if it needs a little work but it otherwise aesthetically in good shape? Is 1100 too high? What about 2,000 for the bottom and top box? Too high? Seems high but maybe I’m full of ****.

Around these parts, any truck brand starts at about 1500 for beat up old junk. Right now everything on fbmp is 3500 and up.

My thought on deep drawers is this: if you have tall tools that need the depth, that's great. If you just have lots of a thing, like wrenches, yes, you can shove more wrenches in the drawer but 3/4 of them will be buried under the top layer.

I would get the snap-on KRL box.
Main reasons:
Larger number of Snap-on Dealers and factory support.
29" deep drawers, they hold a lot more that the 24" or 18" boxes
Replacement parts are available, drawer lock & roll, locks, plus slides.
You can still buy a side box, locker or top chest.
Feel like more used snap-on KRL side, locker and top chest are available if you want to expand one day.
Higher and faster resale with the snap-on KRL box, very subjective but I believe it.
Cannot comment on the other brand, but the Snap-on is proven to stand up to daily use and every single piece of the box is well build.

Surprised a KRL in good condition has not sold for 800, that is a great deal. Make sure it is a KRL vs a KRA, KRL is a way better box and the price you are sharing is low. If you need(since your on this site) a pro box, you should be running to pick it up.
A little cleaning, wax and oiled or new slides can make a used box look and feel new.
Good luck and post some picture.

Yes the Matco is on the high end of price and indeed you want it proper good order throughout to command proper money.
Fact they not sold speaks volumes .
Replacing a lock is not that big a deal but missing lock rods can be bit of hassle find/duplicate .
What I do on boxes like this if they not too far away is say I want buy, without moaning on price then highlight the reality of condition from inspection and see if cash in hand offer can make seller see some logic .
KRL seems more realistic price and you might be likely drop 100 bucks off that,
Reality is real condition dictates the real worth along with buyer condition acceptance/desire/need & only way you know all the little details is by viewing and inspecting .
What you got realise on good truck boxes is you not going loose much if any money years down the road if want sell it, in my 30+ years of working out of used boxes and changing upgrading over the years & stumbling on good deals of something I didn't want while looking for boxes and flipping these items is my current daily auto shop use 20ft of Matco bottom boxes owe me next to nothing . No debt no real depreciation and money in pocket for better things in life .
For sure will find nice boxes and sensible pricing is harder these days, people seem think easy online sales platforms is a licence make money from stating things great or mint condition when reality is opposite ...

Ended up with the Snap On. For one thing, Matco didn’t answer the phone for support and parts and didn’t return the call after three messages…4 days ago. Snap On answered immediately and got me pricing on parts and told me who to call for OEM keys, etc. I liked the Matco but it was overpriced and needed parts that the company wasn’t able to help me figure out on the spot. I got the KRL and the KRA308 with friction slides. Both are beefy as hell. They worked for the decommissioned Air Force base where they came from so I suppose they will suffice for me. Lol.

I don’t NEED a pro box, but I’ve always liked and wanted them and I do almost all of my mechanic work myself and I feel like I should have a box I’m proud of. Plus, I LOVE taking used stuff and sprucing it up and replacing parts to make it like new. I enjoy that.

I DO own a US General small top chest and I bought brand new and it’s fine. It will last a life time as it’s pretty stout being a smaller box. but I feel warm and fuzzy with Mac, Matco, Snap On tools in my shop.

So, what this box needs to make it totally complete is:

Grease on the slides

A square trim plug on top in chrome

One lock cylinder

And I guess it needs a couple of the black plastic spring things that keep the drawers “caught” when you close them. A few don’t catch anymore and one is missing. Personally, I HATE those so I took them out. It took 5 seconds. So probably won’t replace those.

One thing I LOVE about this is the full width top drawer. I’ve never had a box that a drawer that size wasn’t flimsy and wimpy. This one is NOT. it’s solid as ****. All the way across. Front to back. Build quality is amazing. Totally happy.

Enjoy the KRl, far more enjoyable than spending similar coin in HF plus you loose next to nothing if sell in future .
Nothing beats buying used high quality for fairly small chunk of money .Spruce it up and load it with tools and get to work fixing stuff ...
