Hi gang. Typical long time member with no posts starting a build thread! I've followed lots of builds here and learned a ton about what I might want in my own garage when the time came.

Well...We are here!

I had bids out for a while and finally set the plan into motion back in February. Plans were drawn and permits pulled so we could begin. We decided on a 32'x30' stick built with a 2' high extended block wall to raise the structure up, giving me a 10' overall ceiling height inside. 8/12 pitch roof with 1/2 attic and 1/2 scissor trusses to make use of the vertical height (cheap sq-footage) and still allow for a future 2-post lift down the road.

The garage will be a space for me to work on Jeep/fabrication projects and free up space in the 2 car attached to keep the Wifey's vehicle inside. Happy wife as they say... :thumbup:

That’s a great idea! BUT my cutaway view is probably confusing. It’s a regular 8/12 front and back. I just created that cutaway view to show the inside and attic space clearly.

If it is not bolted down, he is going to investigate it. Sometimes he manages to even pick up the things that ARE bolted down. He is thoroughly enjoying having his own construction site show every day.

Huge difference!

We got the trench in for power and added a separate conduit run for networking. I have a solid WiFi connection now where the shop is, but want to have the option for networking/automation in the future. Easy to do while everything is opened up.

Concrete is done, attic stairs are in and some basic OSB flooring is down for now up there. We're ready for siding and brick work as soon as that material arrives. Added a 4' wide apron across the front to help when offloading broken jeeps and machines that will eventually make their way into the space. I've always hated dragging things into every garage I've worked in. Always a tricky curb to get over or no clearance away from the outside wall to drop things. That should help make it a little bit smoother with the limestone driveway.

I borrowed this Kubota B26 loader/hoe last week to spread a boatload of topsoil around the foundation and to level out the yard from all the traffic over the last few months. Ended up spreading another 20T of 3B and #57 limestone on the driveway to establish the grade up to the apron and dress the rest of the parking areas. I don't think I need a tractor quite this big, but a smaller BX series with a belly mower might be in our future after seeing how handy they are.

My brick showed up today, so I'll get that on the front face and then finish out the overhead doors. I've been picking away at the wiring when I have a few minutes here and there so I can get some lights in there. Can't wait to have it all closed in and then work on insulation/paneling.

This looks really great man!

Also, I have a JD 1026r with a belly mower. It's my main mower and snow removal tool. It's insane how useful that thing is. 10/10 recommend getting one.

What is your ceiling height under the attic space going to be? Great build! I am in the planning stages of doing a half attic half scissor truss shop as well.

Thanks!

The plan is to use that area for organized storage of all the little things that slowly eat away at space in the garage. I do a fair share of work building rock crawlers and Jeeps so plenty of small parts, wiring supplies, and tools that accumulate and eat into working space. The attic was cheap sq-footage that just so happens to help keep all those things out of sight, organized, and clean until I Need them.

10’ under the attic side.

The 1/2 attic 1/2 scissor really seems to be the way to go if you’re planning on a lift at some point like I am. If you’re not, then I vote full attic over the span.

I understand that the scissor trusses get you a good amount of additional height in the center of the garage bay where you will presumably put your lift, but will you still be limited by the garage door tracks? They’ll still be around 9ft high right?

Great looking shop!

Thanks! Good eyes.

We installed high-lift tracks in the lift bay and wall mounted jack-shaft Liftmaster 8500's to prevent that exact problem! The door track runs up high and follows the 4/12 pitch inside ceiling very closely. There should be room to get my 3/4 ton pickup on a lift when we're done. BARELY. haha

The next project: Lighting.

I poured over tons of threads in the lighting forum, and picked up some great tips and tools to help make the decision on type, quantity, and placement. Ended up doing LED can-less under the attic bay. The work bay got six Lithonia 100W 12000 lumen LED high-bay UFO controlled by a 0-10v dimmer for ~110 lumens at a 30" work height.

I used the tools on www.visual-3D.com for layout, making a few small changes to adjust spacing around the overhead door.

Very happy with this setup as it is, but I'm going to add a few more LED cans for task lighting where my workbench will eventually end up. While we're doing wiring/lighting, I'll likely add 1 or 2 of the LED cans up in the attic storage space.

Good question. I've debated that for a while now and I've seen it done a few ways, including no wall with just a railing up there. After a few discussions the current thought is close in the wall with no window.

I don't want to give up the area on that inside attic wall that I could use for storage just to have a window to nowhere. It would have to be limited in size due to the 4/12 pitch lower cord on the scissor truss also.

Do you have link to the high bays by chance? I am trying to settle final lighting on a 24x36" with 8' walls and 12' ceilings.

Thanks! Seems there is a bunch of crawler/wheelers on here, which makes a ton of sense.

The one that started it all for me and was my first ground-up build was my YJ. Pretty typical one ton Jeep build with a few extras. 60/14BFF, linked, Atlas 4spd, GM L67 supercharged. FUN rig that deserves more attention than I've given it lately.

I really like this and is very similar to what I’m hoping to start soon. Do you have any more recent exterior pictures? I’m curious about the 2’ block wall. What are the pros and cons of that vs building taller walls? I am building in an area that has a small potential for light flooding and I was thinking that approach might offer some protection if that were to occur.

Also, I am also planning to install a lift. From what I’ve seen, the concrete requirements for a 2-post lift that could pick up a 3/4 ton truck are 6+ inches, which would add substantially to foundation costs, so I was thinking I’d have a lighter duty 2 post. Have you done anything special with the concrete in anticipation of the lift?

Final costs will vary from area to area depending on lots of factors. Our area ranged from $55-75 per sq-ft.

I need to get out there and take some shots of the front. It’s mostly done other than painting the man door to match the overheads. I’ll grab a few pics for you.

Knee wall pro/cons:

Pros - Block is less expensive than building up with dimensional lumber. I can finish my 10’ walls using one row of drywall/plywood. Resistance to intrusion from water and animals around the foundation.

Cons - difficult to expand later if you ever have plans to add on a bay/room. Insulation is tricky compared to all stick built walls.


For the lift plans, I’m looking at something similar in a 9k two-post. We used 4000PSI with fiber and thickened the pad where the posts will end up to 6”. Probably overkill from what I gather from many lift MFG. Try to plan out where the posts will end up and you can reinforce that local area.

Well so far this was a win! Very happy with the application and finish of the U140 product.

Snapped this photo during application of the first coat. You can see the difference in the bare concrete on the left side of the bay in this photo.

I did two coats, which took 2 gallons total to cover my ~880 sq ft of floor. Covertec states 800 sq-ft per gallon coverage, so they were right on. During the second coat I did manage to kill the cheap pump sprayer that I bought for this project. Lucky I had an old one sitting around that I could transfer the material into to complete the job.


...and the finished floor. Just looks like bare concrete with a nice gloss, but oil just wipes right off it. That is a good thing when you own old Jeeps lol. I considered adding the coloring stain, but like the look of the concrete as-is and just wanted to protect it.

Looks great, currently building a garage myself and really debating which way to go with floor coating. This definitely has me thinking about going this route to save a few $$
