After years of dreaming and reading the forums, my garage is finally underway. The weather is changing fast here in MN so I am looking forward to getting this wrapped up before the first (sticking) snowfall. We already had some last week.

Specs
38x26x10
9x16 garage door

As it sits now, concrete is in and I am waiting on the blocks. Framing should begin next week.

Looks like a great project. Planning on getting it buttoned up before the snow flies?

That's the plan, blocks in the rear and framing up this week if the weather decides to play nice. I'm trying to take advantage of the weather and get my deck stained today.

Fast forward, it has been a busy month

The brick and sticks went up between rain and freeze

Fast forward to today, getting the boat in there and the siding going on

A better look at the interior

Next steps are getting the Electric and Gas going which has been difficult to find someone reliable to say the least. Just trying to get that trench done before it freezes soon.

Awesome build, i'll be following along to see how you set it up. I'm also moving into a new (to me) space of a similar size, 28x35.

Awesome, I toyed with going a bit wider too but I wasn't sure how much room i would have with that shed off to the side. We ended up moving it about 8 feet to make some room.

The boat will eat up quite a bit of space in the winter but there should be some more room to get things done this winter since I don't have an adequate driveway to get my summer car in there.

Are you thinking of putting a lift in yours? Any builds?

That's a nice sized boat, i can see how it would eat a huge chunk of that floor space. No i won't be putting a lift in mine as it really wouldn't be needed. The depth would allow me to have a couple cars on dollys parked perpendicular at the front of the garage if needed, but i wouldn't see really needing to do that. Planning on also adding a shed to absorb any overflow pieces.

RE - insulation gaps over the unfilled block cells. Can you drill through the sill plate and fill it with low expanding foam or grout if you need the strength? I don't have any examples but I'd guess something like this would provide a good deal of insulation and strength if needed. Great looking garage!

Looks like things are coming along nice! What are you plans for the space? Auto work? Wood work? Storage?

We have similar sized shops and I just finished the ceiling, now time to insulate before it gets any colder. I do metal and woodwork in mine.

A question I had about the brick, when I go to insulate, does anyone have any suggestion as to what I should do for the gaps? Any examples out there?

Does you bottom plate sit on open core block? That's a no-no if it is. The bottom plate should be sitting on block with either the cores filled, or preferably on termite blocks. Then you should have had a foam seal between the plate and block. As it is now, just about the only thing you can do is use some hydraulic cement, or caulk it every few years. Also, if you are going to drywall and drop the drywall onto your lower plate, your anchor bolt(s) look to be in the way.

Yes it is sitting on mostly open core. They are filled where you see the bolts. Technically the block was laid on top of the concrete foundation a few weeks after the slab was down. It it did end up passing foundation and framing inspections so I am not sure what the rules are there.

To your catch on the anchor bolts, I caught that as well and was going to talk to them about it but I am not sure what they're going to do at this point. That is going to be a real pain to get around.

Thanks! Yours is looking good as well. Mine will be for all 3 actually. Metal in the future but for the time being, just trying to get it wrapped up.

Just strap the walls (like a ceiling) prior to drywall and notch out where the bolt is. Not sure how proud those bolts sit but you may have to use 2 x 4 instead of traditional strapping.

I think that is what I'd do also is strap the wall. Find your proudest bolt, then see whether you can get by with a 1x2 (actual thickness 3/4") and fasten to the face of the 2x4's.

As far as the gaps in the blocks, you may be able to get by with putting 1/4 round trim down to cover the gaps.
