Very cool esp that it was your grandfather's. Just curious what is the knob used for?

A handle to pick it up. Without the knob, it would be difficult to get a grip. It’s quite heavy.

What a fantastic relic, from a time when US Steel & Krupp were true giants of the industry. It may also have been used by Krupp to promote "V5M", which I'm assuming is a vanadium grade of steel.

I'm pretty sure there are no US Steel facilities in Mexico. US Steel was recently bought by Nippon Steel (Japan). And, Russia has steel mills in the United States......how crazy is that? Yes, they're under the "Made in USA" banner.

Thanks for the info, I had no idea what the marking meant. I wonder if the scale is made of v5m.

I was hoping it was. Engineers like to have items (I.e. chunks of odd metals) on their desk, to distract those who come by to make them do more work. Keeping various flavors of Hastelloy, c-22 and Stainless Steel on my desk worked for years. Melted expensive relays were good to keep the electricians distracted.
