Cheers ladies and gentleman.

We got a house in 2017 but were super busy with getting the house redone and I spend good few weeks worth of work to get the garage to where it is now. Still have some extra stuff to do and to organize all the stuff around so it's nice and neat but its a start.
Living in Chicagoland area the winters gets bad so main goal was to insulate it and than get the heating going.

Enjoy!

Started with insulating the wall and putting up old vinyl flooring that we ripped out from our house during remodeling.

Then came the other wall but this one had to be done with plywood because I simply run out of flooring.

I'm missing a lot of pictures so i may add them later on.
We finally got the 220v 5000w heater that was on sale at menards for 50 dollars and garage door insulation. Even my lady helped me out with this one.

Good work so far. You are off to a great start if you did all that in just a couple of weeks. What is your plan for insulating the ceiling?

p.s. your corgi looks like a 10 pound sausage in a 5 pound bag.

Haha my corgi is not all that fat tho.

As far as the ceiling goes if you go back to the pictures you could see i did put up cheap r13 insulation and followed with a 3/8 plywood

Oops, don't know how I missed that. R-13 is a little light for Chicago winters, no? The roof is the most important area to insulate due to the chimney effect. Do you have soffit vents?

R13 is not the greatest as far as the roof goes but its way better than nothing i guess. I have 2 Roof vents but i didn't cover them, i probably should eliminate one so that the warm air doesn't escape.
But with that small heater turning on every 2 hours on the lowest setting keeps is at around 50 degrees inside even when it was 15 outside.

I loose a lot heat thru the singe pane window, i should cover it for winter.

I really like the look of the flooring on the wall. That's a great way to save some money, and prevent it from going to waste. A durable finish as well.

What do you mean by "two roof vents"? Ridge vents, gable vents?

This is a diagram of a soffit vent. If you have these, you installed that insulation incorrectly I think.

I will have to take a picture for you.
The part of the vent didnt get any insulation. i build 2x6 around it and left it open. Im probably loosing some heat thru it but venting the garage is essential.

I believe that you are both referring to different venting . . .

Kulka, are you saying that you need to be able to vent out fumes or heat in the summer?

Combatninja is talking about the venting needed to avoid rotting out the structure of your roof.

Yeah, that was my concern. If he has soffit vents that insulation is installed incorrectly. Maybe Chicago can have buildings with a 'hot deck' roof design but I think that venting would be done on a garage. If it's got soffit vents, any moist air drawn in is going to make that insulation a moldy mess and rot the roof from inside out.

This is top of mind for me because I just had to replace the roof structure on a cottage rental I have. I had solid insulation that I cut down to fit between joists but I didn't do enough of a vapor barrier. It still lasted 20 years - but I would have preferred to not do the repair!

Small update. I needed extra shelving on the right side of a garage because everything was on top of each other so I made some 2x4 shelves. Little overkill but you can sit on the top rack and this thing doesn't even bend.
