A recent trip to Lowes reminded me about these. Some of their Kobalt boxes have a Kwikset SmartKey lock on them (allowing you to re-key them, or match the key to a house key). Anyone know of a source for the locks? Did some digging and wasn't able to find anything.

Not a bad idea. Also they are some very difficult locks to pick. I would be interested in this as well.

I used kwikset locks on all the doors of my new workshop so I wouldn't have to carry around eight different keys. I wouldn't mind having the same key work in my toolboxes as well. My only complaint with the kwikset locks is that I've ran into a couple over the years that I couldn't get rekeyed.

About a month ago I bought my dream box. The stainless steel Kobalt 53" series 3000 box. It has the Quikset smart key locks. The part numbers for the locks are

KSLSILVER90
KSSILVER180

A Google search came up with nothing. You may be able to contact Kobalt though. Best of luck to you

as a locksmith, those locks are great for business. They fail a lot and cause lots of lockout calls.
Of course they are super easy to rekey when someone brings one into the shop, even when they don't have existing keys.

What brand of door locks do you recommend? I don't care if it can be rekeyed or not.

Also they are some very difficult locks to pick.

They are very difficult to pick and nearly impossible to bump key, but they are stupid easy to force past. Stick random key that you don't care about in, grab with channel locks and twist. You might break standard brass key blanks, but I have heard that you can get steel key blanks and never have an issue with breakage. I dunno, only got locked out once and the brass key worked for 1 time use.

Bumping an old thread here. Any luck tracking down the lock cylinders? I was hoping I could find some similar ones with Schlage keyways since that is what I have for the house. If I could put those in all my boxes and use one key for everything, that would be fantastic. Worst case, I could use the kwikset and at least get all my boxes on one key. Right now I have 7 boxes and 7 keys...not fun times.

not a lot of point going too high security on lock barrel type as most of these mid range boxes can be forced open by hand if put effort into it or by a small prying tool if want do effortless, even the truck boxes easy force open with little bit of thought.
I only lock my boxes at work for insurance reason and even then normally only over longer weekends etc as simply too much wasted time packing and unpacking tools morning and evening every day .

Personally, I would never use a smartkey lock on anything that I valued. There are plenty of videos on Youtube showing how extremely easy it is to force this style of lock, and often leaving no signs of the lock being forced.
