Creating a project thread now that things are underway.
970+/- addition, 35w front, 51w back, 12 framing, 22.5 deep.
Addition will be 2' down from current garage, and 1' above, so it shouldn't look too huge. Been a about a year and a half since starting with the plans and permits.



The pad was graded/compacted 7/19/11, and they de-stuccoed the old garage and marked out the foundation the day after.

While being mentally prepared for this to cost more than expected, I was still saddened to get a call from the contractor yesterday. He sheepishly explained a math error. It's only money, right?

Framing's supposed to start next week, so once the slab and stemwall are in, things should move along a little faster. There was a delay while figuring out how to deal with high groundwater in the footing trench.

I'll have a doorway only. While having the space completely open would probably be nice, my electrical panel is on that wall, and the floors are roughly 18" different heights. There's a landing in the new garage (forming visible in one or two of the pics above), and a couple steps down.

Keeping the old garage more or less as-is for laundry, storage, and daily driver parking. The classics will go in the new garage. So while it will hopefully look like a contiguous structure from the outside, there will be two different (but conjoined) garages.

Slab's done, took three truckloads, 25yd. Felt pretty good walking around in my "garage" for the first time today. Something about all that concrete making it official... grading was just dirt.

The last picture is an attempt to show the work area created by the angle between new and old garages. Even with the required landing and stairs, it's still a nice big space. Exciting to have so much workroom... now I just have to organize and keep it that way. Considering wheeled cabinets so I can potentially park another car in there over the winter if need be. Of course, my in laws gave me a freezer and I have been threatening to take up kegging my homebrew...

Had a "square" many moons ago...................Really need Porsche power in it...........Related to that, some group in Germany will build you a Karman Ghia coupe with a Porsche (6) in it........zoom, zoom!

Framing's begun in earnest. Really cool to stand in there, rest my elbows on the sill, and mutter "yup" to myself.

My 9 year old is happily gathering nails from the surrounding area. Bet that will last a while.

I assume those 2 deeper squares before the concrete was poured is for a lift? I've been shopping for one for a while. What are you going with?

the lift is an ancient two post, the name of which escapes me, which I'm getting on trade from a local shop.

Very cool- just finished a very similar project. Faught the HOA at first but it came out great after making it look more residential. Good luck with the project

I looked, but cannot tell, is that far left door not at a standard height?

The far left door is 16x7, center is 10x9, and the old garage will get a 18.5x7.

The idea was to have the left and right doors be the same height, and the center door have the same top level as the right.

Hoping to tie it all together. It's a mixed blessing having different front angles, floor level, roof height.

Roof is pretty well sheathed now, makes it look huge inside, as the eye is drawn toward the plywood instead of the trusses.

Roof's on, stucco guys got started. Was told I put the wrong electrical boxes on the exterior... lovely, my first official act in the new shop was done wrong.

Driveway was done 10/12. Though I guess it's more of a parking lot than driveway now. Very roughly 80' on a side.

Tried to get a picture of the transition down to the new garage. A bit steep, but I think it'll be fine in use.

Also made a couple improvements to the garage - parked my Volvo and Buick in there, along with a couple of mountain bikes.

Just about two years since I joined GJ.... plenty more electrical stuff to run (feeds to switches/outlets, ceiling outlets, opener outlet, a couple more lights, lift feed), then the air supply, benches, cabinets, shelves.

Lights are the oft-derided Lights of America $10 fixtures with Philips 6500K T8's. Plenty bright, but not overwhelming. They start instantly, no flicker, no noise.

Set up with three for the bench on one switch, three around the front of the Buick on another, the balance on a third. The far end by the Datsun and Volvo will just get a couple for fill, but I'll leave enough capacity in the outlet boxes to add on if needed later... that space might just make a nice temporary paintbooth.
