First off I would like to say this is my first post, and am looking forward to all the help and guidance this community has to offer.

I picked up two L.S Starret Athol No. 1024 vises and want to put the original finish on them, does anyone have any insight the the color of the coating they used?

Starrett used a non-glossy light blue speckled paint on their vises. The speckles create a textured surface, similar to the old auto-trunk spatter paints. Here's an example:

I've looked, and never found a similar paint, so I painted mine with Rustoleum light blue hammered, which I think is an improvement.

Old post response correction- The color match looks close but from observation, Starrett did not use speckled paint. It was light blue, and the speckling is iron texture from the cast, see picture.

Weird revival of a dead thread. In any case you are wrong, they did use a speckled paint.

It was a two-part process first the blue base, followed by the white/black speckle. It's been a couple years but I believe it was Yost who manufactured these for Starrett and I spoke with them directly on the phone while trying to chase down color codes to refinish my vise. The person I spoke to couldn't find the color code but he knew all about the speckle paint on the vise. I ended up powder coating Starett Red

I agree def speckled, This is my original athol 924. Appears white/Grey and blue. No black from what I can see. I've tried to date it but I have no idea. It was my grandpa's so I have to assume its atleast 50yrs+ old at this point. He's since passed so I can't ask when he got it.
