L Shaped Magnetic Bit Holder And Menards Hidden Fee

In another thread I saw someone post this L shaped magnetic 1/4 inch bit holder. It had a link to the tool from Menards

I have an identical Craftsman branded one that I bought years ago from Sears. I really like it and could use a few more for other tool sets, but they are no longer available. I was very happy to see this post advising of their availability.

I do not have Menards in my area and have never done business with them. I immediately went to their website and put a few in my cart. I then spent an hour or so picking out a few additional items that seemed good, for a $93 order. I then went to check out. First, the shipping was definitely on the high side. $18 in shipping for a few small hand tools that wouldn’t even fill a shoebox. I could live with the high shipping, but then I see a $23 “Processing Fee” in addition to the shipping. I have never seen anything like this before. I clicked on the info box, and it described the fee as “Save time - let our Team process your online order for convenient shipping to you or fast pickup in store”. I don’t even know what that means. I could only translate it to mean “let us nickel and dime you with our hidden fees.” Isn’t processing an order part of operating an online store? $41 to get a $93 order to my door? I’m out. Thanks for tricking me into spending an hour on your website browsing artificially low priced merchandise only to be hit with a surprise fee at the end.

The bottom line is I have never made a purchase from this company and am not about to start now after this experience now. This fee has lost me as a customer.

Can anybody help me find this product elsewhere?

Thank you.

Picked up this bit set at Menards and I think it is pretty good deal (especially when they run 11% off) for made in the USA bits. The bits are nicely machined. If you zoom in the photos, you can the fine machine lines. In the photo, the Masterforce bit is on the left and a Zephyr bit is on the right, for comparison. I've used the bits with my Snap-On ratcheting screwdriver but they do come with a magnetic holder with sockets on both the long and short arms. The holder is just a bent metal tube so it's nothing special but the magnets are actually surprisingly strong. The bits come in one of those vinyl holders. I happen to like this bit holder a lot. I typically use ammo boxes to store bits but these vinyl holders are nice for smaller quantities. You can buy similar holders for a couple bucks at Epstein's made by Ulmann Devices.

These bits are higher quality than the poorly machined bits included with the Masterforce magnetic screwdriver. Even though they are the same brand, they are not the same quality. For other bits at Menards...The Montana brand is also good and made in the USA.

I posted it for those who have local Menards stores. The 11% rebate is for in store purchases. And the shipping and handle fees are bad. I have a local store and some other forum members do as well. Some don't.

Do you have friends or family with a local Menards? Maybe they could pick it up for you?

Menards does have some stuff that ships for free from Felo. It drop ships directly from Bondhus/Felo, not Menards.

MEASUREDTWICE - Hopefully I didn’t make you think that I was complaining about your post. I really appreciate you taking the time to create the original thread. Although slightly annoying, the extra cost is not he issue. I would not have complained about it if they were priced at $13. My problem is the way Menards is doing it. It’s not the way I want to be treated as a customer. Again thanks for letting everyone know this tool is out there.

KNURLEDNUT - Thank you for the link. I just e-mailed their customer service. Maybe it will turn up something. Thanks.

i don't like their processing fee either. They charge it even if you purchase the item in your online cart and physically pick it up at the store. And go somewhere else if you need wire by the foot as they don't cut it in the store like everyone else. You buy it first then have to drive around to order pickup. Then you find out you are still in the wrong place and have to drive to end of building in which wire is there but no one to cut it.Pain in the *** for 8 ft. of wire.

This is precisely why I don't buy much at Menards. HD & Lowes have no such 'processing fee' and as such I buy many more things there. The one time I did buy something in this fashion from Menards I had to go all the way through the store and out into the lumber yard to pick-up the order and it wasn't a lumber item. Never again.

You're expected to drive into the yard, which is more convenient than walking to it, in most stores. The ****** thing about their practice is that when you drive in, they scan the order ticket, and charge your card. If the item you're picking up isn't in stock, you are supposed to go to the customer service desk so they can give you a refund.

That's ridiculous.

Lang makes a set of three right (or almost right) angle 1/4" ratcheting bit holders. One's a 90°, the others are about 75° and 105°. A beautiful little set and I highly recommend them.

Maybe their practice is set up to make you walk into the store to grab it yourself. Once you're in the store, the typical thinking is you'll buy something else. Typical for a grocery store to do the same, bread and milk are on opposite ends of the store.

I've thought about creating a list and having them pick it up and stop and grab it. I'm not paying their fee for something I can do myself.

Fortunately, we have a great local store, employees are happy, knowledgeable and if they can't help you, they direct you to the right person. I have a few "go to" people when I can't find something.

The wife and I didn't care much for the store when they first opened, then we continued shopping there. We found it's more suited to our needs than Lowes or HD. Hopefully, one day you'll have a Menard's in your area and you can appreciate being able to visit the store first hand.

but the fact is, without a thriving on-line business that complements and leverages the brick and mortar store, any retailer is going to struggle, at minimum.

those kind of fees are a classic example of executives that don't get it.

yea, i don't get get it. i mean really... how can they not send someone out to the tool section. find a couple things, put it in a box, print out a label and get it sent out for free?

have you ever been to a menards? they are huge. as big as any other major hardware pr lumber chain. mail order/internet order is not their thing. maybe it should be, maybe it shouldn't but that is not my call. one is free to shop or not shop with them. if you want the item they have and they are the only one who has it you are free to buy it or not buy it.

i live close to a menards as many people do but i doubt that you would be willing to pay me or anyone else to go find what you wanted, put it in a box and ship it to you for free or next to nothing like you want when in reality actual cost for someone to do it is close to that.

do i think they are asking too much? probably so but there is no doubt that it costs something to have someone pick off the shelf, package it and ship it. if you don't want to pay their cost don't, but don't ask someone to fo it for nothing either.

It's been 20 years since I worked at a Menards, I'd be surprised if they're really set up to do online sales like other bigger companies are for regular items like that stuff. :dunno:
