So with myself deciding to make a career move, this meant moving from our first home to a new home and a new town. Fortunately, we lucked into this amazing property. My wife and I had been on the hunt for a small piece of land to build our dream home on and then eventually I would be able to build a shop too. With a few months of searching we found nothing that we liked and ended up renting a little place to get us by for a bit. Luckily, a guy at work got a different job and needed to move. He knew I had been looking for awhile and asked if we wanted to check it out. My wife and I went to look and fell in love with the place, needless to say the rest is history. The entire property is right at 1 acre in size and the best part is that it has a two car attached garage to the house which means the 26X30 shop is all for my shenanigans! I don't have any pictures of the house itself but I do have pictures I took that day we looked at it, so everything in the pictures are the previous owners.

Ok so here is where the fun begins. The PO added this room on into the shop because they use to breed dogs so this is where all that fun business happened. Needless to say it took up a ton of space so it needed to go!!

Once I got the room all torn apart I focused on the work bench area. At first I planned on reusing as much as I could but the more and more I looked at it and tried to get things to work I just decided to rip it out and start fresh. After everything was ripped out I hired in a crew to come finish mudding and taping the drywall and spraying on a knock down ceiling.

Once the final sanding was complete I sprayed on roughly 7-8 gallons of Kilz latex primer on the walls and the ceiling which did an amazing job covering up the yellowed drywall. It also made a horrible mess but it all cleaned up nicely.

In my previous garage I built all my cabinets in an effort to save money etc...that was before kids and just being newly married. 5 years later, with one kid and the second to be here in six weeks I decided to buy some builder grade unfinished cabinets and make them fit what I need. So far they are working out great.

Once I got to this point I was in need of lighting. The PO had fluorescent lights everywhere and I just wasn't a huge fan. Luckily, he wired all the receptacles in the ceiling so it wasn't horrible to run jumper wires from the three banks of lights to new boxes where I added porcelain fixtures for a single 200W CFL. My dad uses these lights in his shop and they are amazing on how much light they put off. On each bank of lights I have 4 CFLs- except on the center bank where I added my old Coors light above my toolbox.

Looks like I'm going to need to grab a picture of the Coors light above my toolbox.

Nice property, great start on the shop. That is about ideal size and layout for a suburban homeowner.

Thank you, it's an awesome size for the space. It'll get a little better next year when I add a shed to accommodate the riding mower and all the yard tools etc...

Smart move. Yard tools and equipment, no matter how hard you clean them, bring dirt and cutting into the shop. Not what you want in an automotive work space. Same with woodworking equipment.

Looks great! Nice looking truck too. So I have a question, you mentioned he had fluorescent lights, which you hate, and move to compact fluorescents. What's the advantage to CFLs when they put out less light? Or was it just aesthetics? The CFLs look better than ugly 4' lights hanging all over the place. Just curious is all. Thanks

I'd say it's a couple factors, they do look better than the 4' fluorescents in my opinion, I'm not a fan of dealing with ballast when they go out and the final thing was there were black cords running all over the ceiling which doesn't work well with my OCD. I do find it much easier to change these out as well once they go out, but hopefully they last the seven years like they said on the box.

Once I got to this stage it sat for a little over a month. With just moving into a new home and a new baby on the way I needed to work on a few projects before I could move any further on the garage. The main one was a new fence around the majority of the back yard. I decided to go with a split rail instead of a privacy just because of the shear size of the back yard. We do have dogs so next spring I'll be using some type of a hog panel that is cut down and added to the bottom rung that should contain them, luckily they are small dogs. So when I add the hog panel I'll also be finishing up the gates.

IMAG0126_zps818e0132.jpg

Along the rear of the property there needs to be some work done since there is a pretty significant drop off. I plan to add a retaining wall along the majority of the back and then level off with dirt so I can have more usable space with the back in order for me to add a shed. I'll have to move the swing forward a bit for my wall to go in front of one of the trees, other than that I think it'll go in rather nicely. Here are a few pics of the final product. I still need to get a few more pictures of the whole thing finished but I ran out of light and my phone wasn't taking the greatest pictures that day.

Just a quick update on the cabinets and finally have the counter top finished. And maybe someday I'll be able to work on this project.

Did a little bit of work using some extra trim that I removed from our house. We are replacing all the doors and all the trim in our house so I plan on using it in the shop. When it's all said and done I'll just need to paint it. Once I had the trim up it allowed me to get a couple boards on the wall that will be for all my electrical cords. I found in my old garage these small spaces like this that are hard to use are perfect for hanging electrical cords.

Well I started putting up the corrugated steel that a co-worker wanted out of his barn so a 30 pack of beer later it was now ready for its new home. I am only doing this one wall and it will be dedicated solely for signage. The reason being either my car or truck will be hugging that wall once everything is cleaned up and organized. The pictures actually make it a ton darker than it actually is, so hopefully this weekend I can get some better pics and get a little further. I was at a stopping point since I need to trim out the window so that's the next order of business. And finally my best friend returned an old Coors sign I gave him years back so I'm pretty excited to get both of these hung up and turned on.

You are really moving along well. You had a nice blank canvas to start on and that is just the way to go. I like your bench and topping. You have a great place, your property looks really nice. I am going to be watching the completion of your nice garage.

Best Wishes

Wasn't able to get fully finished today because of a plumbing issue in our guest bathroom so hopefully tomorrow will be the day. Don't mind the wall paper that's from the PO!

Well after fixing last night's plumbing issue, I was able to move onto finishing up the wall. Getting the rest of the tin installed went pretty quick, the time consuming part was hanging all the signs etc...Luckily my 39 week pregnant wife helped me out with positioning and getting everything just right. I'd have to say she's a keeper with dealing with all of my shenanigans and what not. All in all it turned out exactly like I wanted it to. The only thing left to do is actually ripping down some 1x's for around the window and do the final paint on that and the trim work.

7_zpsa836612a.jpg

Once all the tin was up it was time to hang the signs and my little man decided he was going to help. He did an awesome job of handing me all the self tapping screws I dropped.

So after being gone for 8 months now I decided I should probably update the thread a little. Not a ton of work has been done to the garage since I undertook a rather large project in our backyard. The back side of our property had a pretty big slope that was starting to wash away pretty bad and it was just unusable space. So I decided to put an eighty foot long retaining wall made from rail road ties. I knew this was going to be a big undertaking (which it was) however the weather didn't do me any favors when my first load of dirt got delivered and it rained pretty much for the next month... leaving me two heaping mud mounds on my driveway. It was pretty awesome for my two year old but the wife didn't think so. Anyway, after almost three months of working on this project solo I got it all wrapped up and it turned out exactly how we were thinking. The two new areas that were created basically will serve as a fire pit area and the other as a new shed and trailer parking. Enjoy.

My son was pretty much in heaven the first day...there was a tractor working in his own backyard!!

15_zpssolz5qxc.jpg

16_zpsi7jyegoj.jpg

This was the first 10 tons that got rained on for over a month, man was that a pain to move...Ended up with a total of 60 tons of dirt and 15 tons of rock.

First load of railroad ties...Used around a total of 62 I believe...by the end of the project I was tired of moving them.:lol_hitti

18_zpsa7e7qfxa.jpg

20150604_110738_zps5zsvmhez.jpg

Once I got the first course of railroad ties down it went much quicker...I'm used to leveling stone, blocks, etc... so these were a pain!! On the first course I used two foot sections of rebar to anchor them into place- four pieces per railroad tie. Then for the following course I used four landscape spikes per railroad tie.

20150604_110825_zps1v3ryear.jpg

20150709_173128_zpsblxpze6m.jpg

On the third course I started adding what they call a "deadman" to help the wall from pushing over due to pressure/water etc...

20150709_173257_zpskwchmrky.jpg

Each "deadman" was anchored with a 4 foot section of railroad tie with two, two foot sections of rebar and two landscape spikes to tie the two pieces together.

Pretty awesome picture in my mind...my son (who can be spotted in many of these pictures) thought he needed to have his drink right by mine. No matter where I would end up setting it, his was right there too!

20150716_150908_zpsioxrmkm9.jpg

Once it was all up I added the landscape fabric along the face of the ties and the perforated drainpipe- which I wrapped in the landscape fabric and then covered with gravel.

Started moving the dirt along the backside of the wall, this little Mantis tiller saved me tons of time!

And my little man was a ton of help as well!

20150819_095907_zps7bu8f0er.jpg

Since I was this far into the project I decided to kill off all the bermuda grass since I was going to tear up the backyard with the trucks bringing the rest of the dirt. I absolutely hate bermuda...I know it's extremely hard to get rid of but I'll keep on it and just hopefully I can keep it at bay!!

20150819_112054_zps3gpj5fyf.jpg

Scalping it as much as possible before I tilled it...I should of burned it as well and it would have saved me tons of time when I used a harrow to smooth it all back out.

Here comes the rest of the dirt.

20150904_095707_zpstpyh7sb9.jpg

20150905_182512_zps1amhjyji.jpg

I was lucky enough to have a coworker with a tractor he let me rent at a much discounted rate that saved my a$$.

20150904_200558_zpsdku663uk.jpg

My son was a big fan!!

IMG_9064_zps4hstxuhn.jpg

20150905_182535_zpsjg5dqjdv.jpg

The tractor made short work of moving the dirt and tilling the backyard.

IMG_9057_zpsemsvvsbi.jpg

My son approved as well.

22_zpsevxboivh.jpg

So let's fast forward to today and this is what it looks like. I know I need some more pictures of the wall and the backside etc...so those will be coming shortly. All in all after almost 8 months of work I think it turned out pretty awesome. But the real reason behind this big project is that I need more space in my shop. So to justify putting up a shed I needed to do this project first. I need that shed in order to clear my shop of all my yard equipment and landscaping stuff. Next order of business is to get the playhouse in good working order since I about fell through the floor. Playhouse 2.0 starts hopefully early spring. Thanks for looking.

Here are a few of the updated pictures from behind the wall...looks like it's time to do some leaf cleanup again, seems like it's never ending.
