I have a brother model that does about 1/2 inch letters. I don't know if they make one that does 3/4 or 1 inch.

You might have to go with a vinyl cutter and make vinyl letters - a Silhouette Cameo is a great machine for that kind of thing - you could make any size or color letter you want.

If you go with Dymo brand, find the ones that use D1 label cartridges as they have many options for different labels. A lot of them seem to only have white label with black print, D1 offers more variety. 1/2” is as wide as they go though

I have this one that looks to be discontinued, https://www.staples.com/Brother-PT2730-P-Touch-Labeling-System/product_890185. It's really nice and think we paid about 60 bucks at the time. I've been labeling things in the garage more and after buying some more 1" tape cartridges that are pretty expensive I looked into using cheaper cartridges. Started a thread on here and others pointed out that the P touch cartridges this printer uses are a better grade that won't come off or fade easy. So I just **** it up and buy the good ones knowing they stick good and won't just fall off of tool boxes and other things. Never had an issue with them and they are on my plastic tool boxes that get treated pretty rough.

Ya manual embossing Dymos are still available,
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Office-Mate-II-Tapewriter/21067150
They also make a smaller one. I have at least 3, one being nice old chrome #1550 unit, several different embossing wheels. Tape is getting harder to come by. Still find the old ones as fascinating to use as they were when I was a kid.

That said rarely use anymore. Have an older Dymo 260p battery powered thermal, it and a box of assorted D1 colored tapes makes it easy. Versatility of text sizes, orientation etc makes nice labels. Mine also is 1/2" max text height

I just bought this today:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J3WQ360/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Was pretty cheap and works well, and there were decent priced 'tapes' in different colors.

The only complaint I have is that it wastes a lot of tape due to the spacing to eject the label so the internal cutter will work. You can enter a bunch of text together and cut the labels manually with scissors, but there's a limit to the number of letters it'll let you enter. I'm sure this is made this way so you buy more tape, but it's annoying.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Brothers. I have used my P-touch for over 15 years with no problems. I also have a newer version that has the wider tape which is nice for bigger labels, but do have to get the book out to remind me how to use it...

Anyone know if they still make the old style peel off back, plastic labels. You had to have a gun with a “wheel” for letter selection and you squeezed the handle to make a white letter in the plastic.

Some of my dads stuff is labeled like this from 30 years or more ago and still looks great.

I bet I still have my Dad's at home :D

I've had good luck with my "Epson Label Works LW-400" label maker. works great and has cheaper refills than the Brother P-Touch ones.

I have a Dymo 5200 that I need to start breaking in. I bought it as an affordable way to do heat shrink cable labels but apparently it will also do 1" labels as well.

Wow, that's big. I use a Brother. It's labels discolor a bit from heat and light.

I think I would use something PC based for large print. That's about as cheap as it gets. I would look for polyester and a different adhesive than brick and mortar stock.

Know anyone with access to a Zebra printer? That would make metalized, tamper evident, or kapton available. I use to make label lists and print it at work for a small coffee kitty donation.

I did not read all the replies but I bought a brother P-Touch label maker that you hook up to the computer. I have half inch and 1 inch labels and then I have 1/2" and 1" magnetic strip that I stick the labels to. That way I'm not adhering the label to my actual drawers and only using a magnet. I like this idea because if I ever trade drawers I can simply move the magnet.

I personally use SPUTNIK font that I downloaded, and I also labelled my hand held metal boxes (i.e. "Brass Hose Fittings", "Staples", etc)

That 5200 looks like a good deal. I see it supports 3/4" tape too.

Glad you found something to suit your needs.

Those were Dymo. I have a couple if old ones in a drawer someplace. They just barely exist today. If you can find tape, it is probably dried out and won't stick. You can still find a machine pretty easily. I long ago went to Brother P touch. I had a machine that used an older cartridge and my current machine, discontinued, uses the current carts. It will also download all kinds of Brother symbol files and even images from anywhere in a number of formats. Of course the resolution is very low. I have a few parts drawers that have the old Dymo labels on them but the whole system was slow and lacked the versatility of a modern label system.

At my old work we used Brady we had a hand held model that went up to 1 inch or more I can't remember. We used it for wiring harness and General label making.

I have the Dymo LM 160. Its great and under $15 with tapes readily available, but I'm not sure the labels go larger than 1/2"

I'd be lost without my Brother P-Touch PT9200. Takes from 1/4" to 1.5" tapes. Connects to a PC so fonts are unlimited. Printhead is high-resolution so it does a damn nice job printing barcodes, graphics & images. The tapes are laminated so they don't fade or yellow and are solvent-resistant.

Tapes get pricey & I probably go through $200/yr at work but well worth it for the quality and capability.

That sounds like my PT1960 on steroids. There is some clone brand of tape on Amazon that gets good reviews but I never had the nerve to try it. I don't want to label stuff twice if it doesn't stand up. It is a lot cheaper. I don't do that much that the extra expense is a big deal. Has anybody tried an off brand P touch tape?

Our company Purchaser substituted some China knock-off cartridges to fill one of my orders. I couldn't tell the difference in print quality, adhesive strength or durability.

If it was MY money I was spending, I'd use them.

I got the Brother P-Touch PT-D210. It only goes to 1/2", but its been great for use in the home office and the garage for totes, etc. For $30 I would get it again with no reservations

I am going to label my tool box and some other things this spring. I am going to put the labels on a magnet. Because to do move some things around from time to time.

I use a dymo labelwriter. Never needs ink as it burns the image into the paper. They are cheap. There are lots of sizes of rolls that it will run.

I would suggest the dymo

I also have a Brother P-Touch and the above is my problem. Nearly every label on my pegboard has faded to almost nothing due to the heat in my shop.

Is there a different tape for this machine that I should be using? I'm currently using just the standard black on white.
