Label them sockets lol

Lol I figured it wouldn’t hurt if in a hurry to not grab the wrong wheel socket for my car. [emoji38]_hitti
They actually make socket labels too lol. My HF standard impact sockets were from when the sizes were litterally just painted on, and they don't last. So I bought some socket labels. They work good, but be prepared for some to get beat up and wripped off. I don't think they would hold up well on shallow sockets, to much stuff for them to hit.

I labeled my drawers too.

Of course I remember where my stuff is.

I do projects with my daughter and sometimes my wife. They need to know which drawer to find stuff in. I label things to make it as clear as possible.

When I’m not there, sometimes my dad, or my brother need to use a tool.

This is my socket drawer. I also labeled the rails, with drive size and color coded between SAE and metric.

I use a Brother P-Touch PT-D210. If I ever need a larger label, I borrow one of the machines from work.

My labels aren’t stuck on. I captured them between the back, and the clear front strip that came with my tool chest. I can scoot them around If I reorganize.

Sockets come with labels forged into them - too bad they are too small to read

For those of you labeling larger boxes and totes, etc.
The industry standard label is 4x6 inches
Large enough for a magic marker
You can get a roll of 1000 adhesive labels for less than $10.00
Just do a search for "labels 4x6"
I do not worry about removing them, I just put the new over the old

I have this awesome box. It is an ER pediatric crash cart. Front of each drawer is a different color. Apparently there is a color code for when seconds count.
Thing is that it is all aluminum.

Corresponds to a Broselow tape - meds are prepackaged to the colors on the tape.

Glad to read this. I was starting to think I was the only "quick and easy is good enough" guy here.

I use the address labels from Staples that are 1"x3" and write on them with a Sharpie. Ten bucks will buy a lifetime supply. They'll fit on almost anything and are easy enough to read even for my old eyes. Like you I don't bother trying to peel them off, if I need to relabel something the new goes on over the old.

Some of you have garages that are real showplaces and I get that, but I was always more concerned about how well something works than what it looks like.

I use a P-Touch with 3/4" labels. I like the black with gold lettering.

I gave up on my garage activities in IL until it gets warmer. The only thing I did out there was fire up the snowblower.

I select the top drawer, that would allow me to relive my 20's a bit. :rocker:

Even then, I was never a fan of the bottom drawer. 18 years of a happy marriage now gives no reason for them either.

I've been working on some organizing / labeling using an Epson LW-PX700PCD. I like the black label option and you can go 1" wide (as shown). I used a similar label maker for my last bin system which I recently retired. Even though it had 10-15 year old labels, they peeled right off the bins with no issues. I've got couple large rolling tool organizers that I'm thinking of doing next, probably with 1/2" labels.

I am in the market for bins for in my garage. Those look nice. What are they (brand and model)?

A suggestion although possibly a bit late for you. Buy a roll of magnetic flexible strip( comes in rolls). By putting the labels on magnetic strips I can easily relocate labels as things change
I sorta like the magnetic tape idea, but not ready to switch.

When I labeled my Snap-On box about 40 years ago, the only label maker was a DYMO with the "spin the wheel, squeeze the letter" method. Surpisingly, all the labels are still intact and mostly accurate. Since I built my shop about 5 years ago, I have had a Brother P-Touch labeler. I use the 3/4" black-on-white labels for most things. My trick for re-locating a label is that I only stick the top half of the label to the drawer/handle/box. If I need to move the label, it's real easy to lift the bottom half and pull it off.

I really like the look of those totes, and that they are pretty straight sided.

Can you point me to a brand and/or supplier?

Thanks,
D

This is what I decided on. Today I ordered a roll of 1/2" wide magnetic strip, with NO adhesive, and a Dymo label maker. I'll stick the labels on the magnetic strip and have the option of rearranging. My two roll arounds are overflowing so a 3rd is on the horizon and the ability to move labels appeals to me.

Using a Brother P-touch PT-1890 from Costco. Was 20-25 dollars on sale and came with a couple cartridges of different widths.

Label plastic bins/totes for holiday decorations and household items. We also used it for labeling inventory storage when we had an antiques and collectibles business. The labels are holding up after 3-5 years.

Between my 3 triple CM 26" towers, other 26" rollers, 5 drawer cart, etc... I have 72 drawers. I got magnetic strips that I put labels on and then put them on each drawer.

I also have about 100 Hillman cabinet drawer things... all labelled... I have about 16 durham boxes... not only is each box labelled but each bin inside is labelled. I also have about 30 stanley parts organizers... again... each is labelled... then inside each bin is labelled.

Ok... then there are the task specific Plano boxes... yep... everything inside and out is labelled.

I have 9 foot tall metal shelving units (three).... labels all over them... to identify the cantilever toolboxes on... which are also all labelled, inside and out.

I just went out and counted drawers. There are a nice round 110 drawers. Plus about 10 more miscellaneous drawers in other parts of the shop. Most of these need multiple labels. Counting these, shelving units, and cabinets, I'll need between 200 and 300 labels.

I got 100' of magnetic strip and 91' of labels. It's gonna be close but I imagine I'll have to order more. There's no need to order now though. I'll take a wait and see attitude.

My drawers won't be as pretty as some of yours (different brands/colors/sizes/etc.) but after I've got some of them labeled I'll try to remember to post some pix.

Always keep a good supply of label stock and magnetic strips... I use a heat gun to "flatten" my magnetic strips before I put them to use. This takes out the "curve" caused by the spooling.

As far as label length?

I checked my usage of my Brady BMP21... 3/4" Nylon Fabric label cartridges. Since I purchased the thing... I have used enough label to circle an ACRE of land... thats over 850 feet.

Great idea. I'll throw another suggestion out there. Get the clear tape with white letters. Looks a lot nicer.

Is clear with white letters available for the Dymo Letra labelers? I can only find black on clear.

Ever since I helped coach softball using magnetic labels to move players to a given place in the field, I've thought the magnetic strip and labels was the best idea for flexible location management. Outside of metal toolbox, if you have a metal shelves or a larger metal cabinet with doors, you can still stick magnets on the shelf lip or on the cabinet side if you tend to move stuff around. It's a bit of a chore to prefab the labels, but I think the effort is worth it.

It's not uncommon for wife to let someone borrow something too, so that saves them a bit a time. I know that I rarely remember where something goes when its returned to me.
