VersionOne - thanks - that is the same one that I linked to - Ladder-Max.

buddyboy - Thanks for that link - I like the ability to stand off the gutter and have roof access. I don't think the werner is designed to go on the roof.

I have the Werner one, it works great--although I've had mine for many years and the pic that buddyboy posted looks shorter than mine. Go see it in thestore.

It has two rubber feet and stands off of a roof just like that Ladder-Max one but I really don't like how narrow the Ladder-Max is. When you're using a stand-off, you tend to lean out to the side more than you should so the wider the feet are, the better.

The Werner is cheap and has really stood up to some abuse.

Hey Version One - do you have this or just like it? I wonder if the arms could be made out of conduit - the company says they are 16 gauge.

I have one.
I only use it when I am working on a window.
Make sure you can spread the feet out wide enough to straddle a window.
Outhewise I have never had a need.

I looked at these
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/stand-off-arms-0611099p.html
and then made my own. I bought two 10' sticks of 3/4" conduit and a bender for the same price as two sets of standoffs. Cut the tube in half, get one pair of standoffs. Used some 1' ID x 7" long heater hose to prevent marking siding and to prevent slipping. Slip it on before doing the last bend.

I have been a window cleaner for 38 years and have climbed more ladders than I can count. I do not use standoffs very often but the most stable ones are the wide bolt on kind. Pain in the *** to work with but stable. The ones that slip over two rungs are much easier to work with and are stable as well. The one posted by alwaysfloored above look like a accident waiting to happen and much more trouble if you make them out of conduit!!! Do not make them out of conduit!!!!!

I have a basic one like buddyboy posted above and I love it. I've been nervous on ladders ever since I watched my dad take a bad tumble from one nearly 10 years ago. A standoff makes even a light duty extension ladder feel much more stable. It also allows you to straddle windows and it prevents you from wrecking your gutters. Definitely worth $22.

I bought the Werner from HD when I was installing and painting the siding on the shop. It is the best addition you can get for an extension ladder. Usually when I am high up in the ladder, I have a tendency to lay flat against the ladder, which means that the wall I am up against is next to my face. I don't feel comfortable leaning back to get away from the wall to work. With the stabilizer it automatically keeps you away from the wall. Feels a lot more stable also. I won't climb a ladder again without it. Wide is best.
