Hello folks. After a four year wait following the completion of our lake house, I'm finally getting ready to start on my external garage / race shop / toy storage facility. I'm going to have the builder leave the inside mostly unfinished for now so I have some time to make decisions but there are going to be quite a few. I'm hoping I can get some advice and feedback here.

Size will be 40' x 43' with a partial basement and a loft.

Thanks,

Scott

The design pretty much evolved around my request for a steal beam that would span all three bays. Once a trolley is installed, It will come in handy for picking up lots of things but it will be perfect for pulling boat engines. Before that, my design was pretty much a wedge with a loft on the lake side.

Here are a few shots of the lower level. Two rooms plus stairwell for access. One will be a workout room and the other will be mechanicals / boat toy storage. The ceiling over the storage room was trayed with steel so that the bay above could be full length for trailer storage.

Here are a couple of the interior. There will be a bathroom, a workroom and a stairwell. The upper level is the man cave with a deck.

Cool build.
What kind of boats are we talking here? v drive, jet, ?

Right now it's a 94 OMC Sunbird I/O with a 5L Mustang engine that I inherited from my father. It runs great and it's pretty fast but the boat needs some TLC so I will pull the engine and strip the interior next winter. Can't find a good pic right now, this one was right after I finished building my dock five years ago. Man, where does the time go? That's my youngest daughter at 9 in that pic and the one above at 14. Sigh!

Posting etiquette

I've lurked here on and off but I haven't spent enough time to figure out the etiquette for posting questions or pictures looking for comments. Should I post them here or in the discussion forum with a link to the gallery?

Wow, that house is a beast!

Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

It's fairly big but it looks bigger from that angle. Here a couple of shots with the house and the garage.

Well I guess it depends on the topic/question.
1) As your thread grows and more members access it, your responses will improve.
2) Asking specific question in general/electric/heat will get better result sooner. You will need to put enough information in those posts for people to help, but a link to this thread is a good way to provide the background and further details.
3) You can also post a link from here, to the thread in general or wherever, to increase visibility.

3.141528) If you want inline pics hosted here, you can insert images by coping the GJ address, like this

You did a nice job of making the shop blend with the house and the property. Looks spectacular.

I too have a 14 yr old daughter...time goes too fast

Do have Valley gutter with pipes on the inside or that the water running out to the ends?

No, there will be gutters on the shed roofs and the roof that slopes to the rear that go into french drains but nothing internal. We will see how it handles rain and snow. Both the architect and the builder are convinced that it will shed snow without problem. I hope so, we had 6' on the roof of the house at one point the first winter after we built it. The house also has a steel roof and it doesn't have a reverse peak like the garage but it does have a couple of flat ones. Pics of the garage roofs.

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there wherever you are. It was a dreary rainy day at the lake so I spent some of it planning out some things in the garage. Here are a few more interior shots.

I'm planning on a couple of tool boxes from Dragonfire. A nine foot and a seven foot will fit nicely on either side of the column.

They ran a conduit through the floor for power to my lift. (Rotary SPOA 10) and hogged out the substrate to get 6" of concrete under it.

Wallenpaupack?

I spent every weekend and summer as a kid in a stone farmhouse in the woods outside of Newfoundland.

Beautiful house, property and garage build!

Great looking place. Do you have any idea what the stem wall in most of your shop costs? I'm planning a shouse build and have nothing to go on, as far as estimate per linear foot. Seems to be a secret.

Thank you. Yes, it's on Wallenpaupack on the NE side in Hawley.

Thanks, No I really don't. The payment for the "foundation complete" milestone was 75k but I have no idea how close that is to the actual cost.

I need to do something to make these massive 6 x 6s look a little less so. Short of building another deck, I'm thinking maybe a horizontal band of wood around them and then some cross beams to hold a couple of hammocks. It's going to get back filled some but they are still really tall. Anybody have any creative ideas?

If I would have thought of it before we did the house, I would have looked at angled support columns. They match the house, they are just larger and much taller.

Perhaps wrap a belly band on each post about 1/2 way up. 2" x 8" band, perhaps a smaller trim above/below the main wrap. Just breaking up the surface will change it and it doesn't take much for your eye to notice the difference. Paint accordingly.

This is good advice. One other thing you can do is add a link to this thread in your Sig. When you post a question elsewhere, members can easily find your build and see what you're referencing to.

Build it up, add some rip rap out front and a paver patio on top ?

I assume you had an architect or engineer design this? I would seriously consider going back and designing angled supports for your deck. They may be longer than the ones on the house as they would make the most sense to tie into the shop at the floor line as opposed to mid wall. This would dictate the least amount of redesign and additional framing.

It may be an expensive redesign, but I bet you will be much happier looking back on it in a few years time.

We had a downpour the other day and to my surprise, this scupper on the valley kept up. The gutter on the back roof, not so much. Hopefully some baffels will help.

It's been a while since I updated. It's still in progress but at least the outside is getting close.

It's been over a year since I posted. The pandemic slowed things to a screeching halt. Most of the contractors in the area were only totally down for a couple of months but then materials dried up and business at least doubled. We did manage to get the place wired, rocked and painted and the floor has been polished. Both the Modines and the Mini-split system are installed and functional. I've got the lift in and my tool boxes were delivered last week so it's finally functional.
