The ground around the building has been backfilled to hide all the blue Styrofoam. . But it is snowing already so pics are rather redundant

The place is looking great GYPSY400, just wondering if the garage has cut alot of the views off from the house to the lake, I t might just be the angle of the pics. Lee

I might of over looked it but why do you put the wood strips on the walls then t-111 over that instead of directly to the studded wall?

It has cut some of the view off.. but I've lived there long enough to know what it looks like! I'd rather look at the lake down at the lake anyhow.. I also have plans for a outdoor bar and deck along the lakeside wall of the garage which hopefully will be built next year.

The idea of the house-wrap and then the strapping before the smart panel was to give some air space between the outdoors and the insulation. . It also will help keep the insulation dry if water ever gets behind the smart panel.

You read my mind!!! Ya might want a brick patio so you can have a outdoor chiminea to keep warm on those cool nices by the lake.

Nice party man cave!

A few pics of the inside.

Standing near the north wall facing south:

West wall windows, they should let in the sunset quite nicely to give natural light until dark
20131111_203055.jpg

Forgive me for the mismatched windows.. I got them for cheap, although they are brand new.

This is the compressor/electrical room, approximately 6x10

That smart panel stuff looks interesting. I looked it up on the web, but the manufacturer's website is more marketing than substance.

I'm building a 35x40 garage right now. The walls are up and sheeted outside with OSB. Plan is to put vinyl board and batten siding on it, but I'm not big on vinyl.

Looks like you just put up the wrap, strapped it then the smart panel?

Where did you get it? Whats the cost on it vs vinyl siding?

Thanks

I will contact my builder and find out more details of the smart panel.. like you, I'm not a big fan of vinyl siding.. imo, it looks like plastic and also, everyone and their brother has it. I wanted something different, yet cost effective.
The cost was about $32/sheet, so $1/sqft.. all in all its cheaper than vinyl if you factor in 7/16 osb sheeting, the siding and all the trim - that would be about $2/sqft.
The bonus is, I can make it any colour I wish, and change the colour at any time.. with v/s, your stuck with it.
In your case, since you are already sheeted, i would add reflective foam insulation to the outside before your exterior finish ( whatever you choose) to justify the sheeting.. in my case I can only insulate between the studs.

I went to the local Home Hardware building Centre to see if they had Smart Panel. They said they can get it and but also showed me a plywood product they stock @ $32.00/sheet. Its exterior grade plywood with some shallow groves cut into it. It may be OK on a garden shed or something small, but not on a building in my opinion.

Yours appears to have deeper vertical grooves and more wood grain. My builder is going to look into it.

So here is a few pics of what we have so far.. I'm currently working on the electrical which should be done rough-in in the next few days. Then ill plumb in some air lines before insulation and sheeting.

In case your wondering what that line is about 2/3 up the wall... It's a drip edge for the smart panel.. That's so water doesn't sit and absorb into the edge of the sheeting. Once I stain it, it will be colour matched to what ever colour the garage becomes.

Once again, my hats off to Barbeau Gainer builders of Sudbury Ontario.

Ok, so high time for an update.. been kind of busy with the interior work, but Christmas and a Jamaica trip have slowed things down..
We got the electrical roughed in and passed inspection
20131221_204129.jpg

We got the air system plumbed in with copper pipe.

And once that was done and tested, the insulation started. Using R20 in the walls, and R40 in the ceiling.

Here's a shot of my boat house/rail system.

That is a slick set up.. we had something similar to that at my old family cottage.. 2 stall boat house with cradles.. drive in and the boats could be raised out of the water.

Well, progress is not as far along as I would like, but I figured I would post some pics anyhow.

I needed to get my compressor closet completed in order to store misc. junk in there to make room in the main room.. it seems as though every time I need to do work in there, I'm moving stuff from one side to the other, and things are always in my way.

Started out with a studded room (see post #64)
Insulated with Roxul Safe and sound

here is a pic of the exterior wall near electrical panel

Roxul complete and paneling in progress

Nice build, surprised they let you construct so close to the lake. 100ft back is the closest we can build now (South Frontenac Township, North of Kingston ON).
