I did some searching and haven’t found anyone else that’s done this but I was hoping for some input on using laminate wood flooring in a garage. Some details: it’s a one car attached. I plan to use the back half for a home gym, treadmill, erg and bag work area and the front portion will house a small beverage fridge and tool boxes and woodworking tools. Right now the floor isn’t coated but I plan to seal the floor with or without putting down flooring.

I just want to know if anyone has done this or knows how it works in a garage. I can get it for $0.70 a sqft. Thanks in advance.

Here is what I can say. I originally started out with my work shop (general diy and wood) in the basement. I put down delta fl and a laminate. The laminate does not take abuse well. It chips and dents pretty good when hammer or something is dropped on it. I have since moved my shop to the garage. I am using the basement space for a gym and other stuff and the laminate is still down there. I personally wouldn't recommend laminate for a workshop or a gym if weights are being dropped on it. I think the laminate I used was 7mm and I guess there may be better products than what i used. What about a vinyl plank? Heard good things that.

The tool area would have a large shop mat down to protect the floor and all the equipment would have rubber under it to protect the flooring and reduce vibrations.

Just an FYI, we put some vinyl plank in a man cave. Light stuff sitting will leave a dent in it, supposed to have been one of their better products, not the most expensive but not cheap either. A small utility cart with hardly any weight left indentions where each wheel was.

Vinyl plank also can expand and contract from the normal temperature swings in a garage so use adhesive if you plan on doing this.

Go for it. If it's going to be a heated or semi heated space.....just take the necessary cautions from moisture.

I've been intrigued by the plastic/vinyl snap lock stuff HD has on the end shelves now. Looks nice and is 7mm I think. much better than the super thin **** currently in my kitchen. they have lower-priced lines than the $2.70/ft stuff, may be worth looking at. gets you the finished look without the damage risk highlighted above

I would not use laminate in a garage. I redid my kitchen a few years ago. Opted for laminate against my better judgement. Had a small water leak in my dishwasher. I had to replace the entire floor. It was less than 2 years old. I'd assume you'll see similar moisture in a garage at some point.

I bought large interlocking rubber tiles for my garage. I've had them about 10 years, and they still hold up well. Easy to clean too.

You will want to make sure your floor is pretty flat if you are going to lay down rigid planks. I put vinyl planks down in my garage about a month ago and ended up using the thinner, somewhat floppy vinyl because the floor wasn't flat enough for the thicker rigid stuff (and I didn't care enough to try to make it flat).
