It is OSB backer with a rough saw look on the face, primed in a beige color, for me my garage is brown so I don't need to paint. A lot cheaper than drywall, and no finishing. A friend of mine used this in his 40 x 60 barn and it came out great. I got it at Menards for $12.00 a board. Less than a buck a square foot. I will have insulation blown in once ceiling is complete. I don't need anymore ladder time hanging insulation.More pics to come ..............

Very much looking forward to seeing this.
Still looking for ideas that fit my needs - ceiling is the last thing left for me.

Thanks for posting.

You are not worried about the brads pulling through the material over time?
I thought you'd need a nail with at least a small head on it.

Are you hand nailing or using an air nailer?

I shot 5 to 6 braids per truss on an angle, I would be surprised if they pulled thru. If they do I will go over it with # 10 ... 2 inch. That's what is nice about rustic, you cant make it look bad ...... I just posted 2 more pics, the ceiling is about 90% done, it has been a big job. It looks great, I intend to trim out the pull down staircase along with some ceiling molding then I am done for a while. I will insulate the walls and finish them in half dry wall 1/2 T-111 to give it a rec room look but that wont be till next year.

I will post the finished pics of the ceiling in a couple weeks ......
The real beauty of using this is when its up its done, it is painted in a beige primer which is the perfect color for me since my garage is brown .....

More to come ............

I can understand why you are so happy with the results. The ceiling looks great and well worth your efforts.

Wow, that is looking great !!
Especially like the excellent details on the attic ladder door.

For ceiling insulation, you can even drape plastic over everything and blow in fire retardant paper cellulose. For the attic door, build a "hat" out of rigid foam so all your heat won't go up and out that door.

I decided on the lighting, I am going with 9 - 14 inch barn style lights with 100 watt LED light bulbs. It will give plenty of light, probably not as good as 4 foot LED strips but I like the look of the lights a lot better. Pics to come in a couple weeks .....

Almost to the end, I did some lighting work last night. Got 5 of the 9 fixtures installed and I think they look great, I like the " industrial look ". I intend to use 100 watt LED bulbs in the fixtures. If I figured right 3 fixtures will throw 4800 lumens which is the equivalent of 2 .. 4 foot LED strip lights. Either way, it will be plenty of light for what I need and it looks good.

I have 4 lights to install and trim the ceiling the on to some spring work ...

That came out looking great.

Thinking of my application...I wonder what this weighs compared to drywall? Looks like a 4x8 sheet would be 32 sq., and two 3/8" x 12" x 16' (14.66 sq with 1" overlap) would cover a similar 29.32 sq, and weigh 41.6 lbs. doing it.

And a 1/2" sheet of drywall would weight 44lbs., so fairly comparable on weight (but a lot easier to put the boards up, I would think).

I'm considering the weight because some of what I need to enclose is the underside of my storage trusses, so I'm try to stay conscious of how much weight I hang under them.

All done for the moment, I will leave the walls open but do intend to finish them in the future, not any time soon.
Ceiling came out great and I love the lighting !!
I trimmed out the ceiling but built it out a 1/2 inch that way I can just slide my 1/2 drywall up underneath it and not have to remove it in any way.

Done ..... It was a BIG job ....
