Large carbide burr on a die grinder

I'm thinking about getting a couple larger cylindrical carbide burrs to enlarge some holes. I've used 1/2" burr on my 1/4" die grinder (air powered) with good success but my result could have been more consistent if I had use larger burrs like 5/8" and 3/4". Before I fork down the $$, should the die grinder be able to keep up with those larger burrs? My die grinder is IR 308 straight.

I do not know the specs of that die grinder, but do know that .5 horsepower minimum will be needed if you want to really utilize that size burr. BTW, are you thinking of using a double or single cut burr?

I don't have the spec on mine (actually 308A) but according to IR website, their new current model 308B is 0.33 HP. I'm using double cut on all of my burrs.

shamrock12;
what material are you grinding?

I do better with 3/8" burrs even 5/16", best all around medium double cut pointed tree but not in aluminum

in aluminum, spiral 6 flute rounded trees :thumbup:

for enlarging holes a fine flame ~5/16"

least useful; cylinders, balls and straight tapers

28K 1/4" long shank Dotco 0.3 HP

machinist supply shops have wax lube comes in a 14 oz paper tube works fantastic
