Large CL vise.....not mine.

I just saw this vise a few hours ago while doing my local vise creeping for the day. It's a beast, but can't see a maker on it (Athol?? or Reed??). It needs a little work, but if you could get it for $100 and weld the ear back on it would be a nice goliath to add to the collection. Looks like the swivel base nut needs some work. Aslo had some welding done on the jaw. I'm taking a break for now. Got about five I need to figure out what I'm going to do with.

They are in the thread. Two parkers (#975&973), a small Dunlap, Reed #104 and a Morgan Chicago #140. Actually now that you ask, I also have a small Stanley and a Asian Pacific 80's era vise. All are in the thread with pics.

Wow, that thing has been beat to hell. Did you notice the large weld across the dynamic jaw? Athols were always well marked and operating nut was never that stretched out. It actually might be a Prentiss the way that swiveling jaw was machined and the length of the front nut.

Usually they have a pronounced "eyebrow" over the handle but it could of been broken off considering the abuse this vise has seen

That looks like a Prentiss #22 which would have a 6" jaw. I have the same vise with a fixed base (#5).

I think we have a winner!!! The only difference I see is the end of the lead screw looks bigger on the beat to hell one. It probably has 5 3/4" dynamic and 6" static jaws.

The first pic is a No.10 with swiveling jaw and the second is a No. 57, weighing a feathery 200lbs

I can see what looks like those "eyebrow" marks on the CL one. Did they have some sort of splined spanner wrench that you would put there to put the vise in quick relaese/lock down mode??

No, those are bite marks from somebody using a huge pipe wrench to crank down on the handle. They shouldn't be there but i have not taken the time to remove them on the lathe.

I would have to cut the handle off to get it smoothed out and i really don't feel like doing that right now.

I've got enough vise projects cooking right now.

guess I was looking at the wrong brow?? I still don't see what you are talking about. The second closeup pic you posted looks like it has some bad grind marks on it along the edge where the handle goes through??? Is this what you are referring to??

No, but those are grind marks. The handle had been smashed down on the nut so many times the steel was flared out like a heavily used chisel. I cut the excess away and filed the rest of the high spots down.

The marks i'm referring to in the second picture are right behind the rounded nut, when it tapers down before coming in contact with the jaw casting. Those are all wrench marks and possibly even a waffle like ding from a framing hammer.
