Does anyone make a drill bit extension for a drill bit up to a ½” shank? I know there are some company that make them for the smaller bits and even for the hex bits but I am wanting to be able to use a standard drill bit. How all this got started was I need to drill a 1” hole on my car but it was recessed in an area that was a about 6” deep and a regular bit was not long enough. I know I can use a hole saw but I think it would be handy to be able to use regular bits also.

Probably be easier to get what used to be called "rifle" bits. If of any size, they are a foot or more long.

You may also see these longer drill bits called aircraft drills. Do you want something for 1/2 shank bits only (ie silver and deming) or do you need it to have a chuck on it? If you only need it to hold 1/2 bits, you can use a piece of 1/2" drill rod and a shaft coupler. This only works well if the drill shanks have a flat spot ground on them for the coupler set screw. If you don't understand what I'm describing, shoot me a pm and I'll take a picture for you.

weld a piece of drill rod to the end of the drill bit and grind it smooth. you can make it as long as you want.

This is similar to what I am looking for. I was just wondering if they offered anything mainstream. I have looked at aircraft bits by too expensive for as little as I would use it but I think it would be great to have one. I like the coupling idea but would you to be able to use bit smaller than a ½” like a 3/8” or so.

If you get a drill sets that has the screw gun hex on the shank you could have one extension and drive them all, and they probably make the extension already

Those are a lot more $$ than standard drills however.

I looked on the HD website but didn't see what I was looking for. Go to the store and look in the electrical area. They make bits that are for running romex inside your walls to the house. I've got one that is about three feet long. They come in various sizes and I think that they have one that is an extension. They can also be "bent" to go up the walls.
