Large Garage Cabinet

After being a member of this forum for several years I felt it was time for me to contribute something.

A friend from my work and I decided to build these large cabinets,one in each of our garages, we started with the one you see in these pictures. I got the plans from a "Family Handyman" magazine.

The contents of the cabinets may not be very manly, but it means that I get the open shelves in the garage back. We don't have much pantry space in the house, so when we moved in last year, I put the shelves up to store the excess kitchen stuff.

That's enough of my babbling, here are the pics.

No legs needed. My friend and I both stood in the cabinet without issue. That's right around 500lbs between the two of us.

The wall I get back, still needs organized so I can bring my toolbox from my mom's house.

Nice work.

Sliding doors are hard to beat -- and making it 'float' above the floor will make cleaning the garage easier.

Nice work my man.

Ya might want to stain it or at least put some clear on it to protect it.

Otherwise the dirt on your hands will stain/discolor it.

Looks great. I have the plans from family handyman printed out and hope to build some for my own shop when finish work comes around. Glad to see their plan really does work out as well as I envisioned it to.

I first planned to paint the cabinet, however I am really starting to like the look of the wood. I may change my mind and just put some polyurethane on it.

49stude2r6- Do the plans that you have call for hollow core doors or 1/4" lauan for the doors? There are two different sets of plans, but they are very similar.

To anyone thinking about doing this cabinet, plan on alot more time than the magazine says. The magazine made a reference to it only taking an afternoon. All in all we have 20+ hours for the two of us to build this one and make all the pre-made panels for my friend's cabinet. I will post how much time we have in both once we finish his.

Hmmm, I like that. I never thought about using sliding closet doors for cabinets out inthe garage.

Thanks 67pete300 I have archived a copy for future reference. The plan looks like it would support shallower depths as well. I have a steel building with 5 foot distances between the Purlins (I believe the horizontal wall beams are called that). This might make and excellent basis for cabinets built-in instead of a wall between the 5 and 10 foot heights.

That link is actually to the other cabinet design. I am off work until January 4th and have no way to scan the article we used. I will make sure to scan the copy of the article I used and find a way to post it on here or email to those who are interested.

They are pretty much the same cabinet design, just that the article we used is a little more finished design.

Nice work. I agree with the value of it being off the floor for cleaning. Is paint or stain/clear in the plans? If so, what finish?

I"m posting reference info for the large garage cabinets that badtomatoes needed. The article can be found @ The Family Handyman magazine September 2003 edition titled Dream Garage. I too have done these cabinets in my garage hung from a 12 ft ceiling. They look & work great neighbors are impressed.

Thanks Quicksilver! During my last trip to the library I looked through at least 2 years of magazines page by page with no luck. I would have kept at it but I have two very young boys and thats about the time they started tearing stuff up.

Now I know what I'm looking for. Thanks again and nice work on the cabinets.
