Large Husky Toolboxes... Worth it?

Long story short - Buying new house. Building out the garage. Looking to increase my tool storage.

I have this 52" Husky box that I got off craigslist for $300:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-52...-Wood-Top-22-in-Extra-Deep-75811AHR/206758940

It has been good for what I use it for. I put too much weight in the long top drawer and it has sagged out in the middle and rubs when opening. I overloaded that drawer with all my extra nuts/bolts/parts kits/brackets/screws/etc in there. Rookie move for a cheap box that is way too full. Im guessing if I take all the weight out it will stop rubbing.

I am pondering two options:

1) buy this 52" tool chest to go with it:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-52...l-Cabinet-Set-Black-HTC5206-HMT5212/205431577

OR,

2) Sell my workbench and try and find a used nicer quality box in the $1000-$1500 range. Unfortunately we do not have Harbor Freight in Alaska. HF is not an option.

I really cant justify dropping several thousand dollars on a new truck box although it would be nice.

I already have 2 sets of black Newage Performance Plus cabinets that will be installed as well. Ideally I would like my box(es) to match.

I'm open to ideas. I think Husky is my best bang-for-the-buck option unless I get lucky on craigslist. We have lowes/sears/homedepot. No Harbor Freight.

I would recommend the harbor freight 56". It is a really really awesome box for the money.
I know you want your side boxes to match but pound for pound I think the HF is a far superior box.

C'mon man! As stated above, I live in Alaska and I would happily pick up some HF tool storage, BUT we don't have Harbor Freight in our neck of the woods. That, and shipping would unfortunately be insane.

FWIW, the newer all-black Husky boxes are just a tad heavier gauge (20ga vs 21ga) and have 120lb weight rating per drawer vs 100lb per drawer. They are 2" deeper and have soft-close slides too. The 52" model is runs $100 more than the one you linked and weighs 418 lbs vs 357 lbs.

I looked at them side-by-side in the store and the newer model seemed a lot more sturdy, but it's hard to tell when they are both empty. They did have a drawer loaded up with at least 50 lbs of stuff which was nice to see how smooth the soft close works. I was impressed enough by the box to be considering it in an upcoming purchase.

It's not as heavy as the HF boxes are, and probably not as well built, but doesn't cost as much either, plus I just prefer the black box to a red one. lol

Same here man, shipping for HF purchases is insane. I got a quote on a 44 inch box that a lot of people here rave about and it was going via freight for $600. I have a 42 in Husky box and it's lasted 3 years now. The newer boxes are thicker and have better drawer slides so go for it. Toolguyd Stuart says some boxes may be made by the same contractor that makes Milwaukee boxes.

Wild hair time...

www.strictlytoolboxes.com

Give the folks down there a call, and see if they ship to Alaska, and what the charges would be...

They offer "Free Freight", in the Lower 48...So it might not be so exorbitant...

Good luck in your quest...

I wish there was a secret squirrel rate for shipping to Alaska but there really isnt. I talked to a few of our forum dealers for miscellaneous things I am looking to purchase and none of them even entertained the idea of my business. I just got a flat out 'we dont ship there'.

I had to work with Newage directly to get my cabinets, and even to get those I had to coordinate shipment exchange in Seattle to a third party freight company, which would ship them to the port of Anchorage, which I then had to go pick up. For a hobbyist/residential toolbox I would much prefer to look locally.

I have also been looking at the higher end Husky boxes that were mentioned but I havent seen one up here yet. Maybe they will stock a few for christmas and I'll be able to scoop their big toolchest.

I have had one of those big ones for three years now. It's holding up fine. I don't have a ton of tools in there but it's full. No problems yet. I bought the side one also and it's draws are big enough to over load it. I put my fishing gear in that one. It was only 100 bucks. I might buy an other one of them.

Sounds like the husky is gonna be your best bet. You can take some thin ply wood to line the drawers that should help with sagging

I dont need something immediately so I'll poke around on craigslist and see if anything comes up. If not, I'll probably go with another Husky box.

I took all the heavier stuff out of the center of the top drawer and it doesnt rub/sag anymore. I'll have to do the ol' plywood trick in the meantime.

I've got the 52" Husky combo, and I've loaded it full of my tools with no issues. Loaded, but not overloaded...and I think that's probably the key. It's not a pro box, by any stretch, but for my home shop it's fantastic. If you want a better built box, look at the Dewalt units Home Depot sells. A buddy bought one, and it's definitely much closer to a tool-truck level of box vs. the Husky.

I would second checking out the new black-out husky stuff, it is very very similar to the Milwaukee box if you have any experience there.

Husky also put out a 56" combo that has 22" deep drawers and it looks pretry awesome for the price point.

If you go with the Husky just don't overload. You said you have Sears. I have a Craftsman Industrial box and it is great! I love it. Much nicer than the regular Craftsman so there's another option for you!
