Large Mail & Package Slot

I just completed a large mail/package slot on my front porch. I have an enclosed porch and had a mailbox mounted to the outside of the porch (no drive-up curb mailboxes on my street). For years I've wanted to put this slot in so I would have a more secure mail and package arrival system. Now I can lock the porch door and have my mail and small packages safely inside on the porch when I get home from work.

The ramp is made of some scrap Formica countertop I had laying around. The door is made entirely of stainless steel scrap I had laying around. It's mounted with stainless spring hinges. I have probably a total of around $20 - $25 in it and a few hours of my spare time.

I've always been concerned with somebody pushing a little kid through them to unlock the door to for a robbery. Now that I'm a FF, I worry about the issue that somebody could firebomb your house using the package door. All things being the same, if somebody wants to rob you and set your place on fire, it won't matter if there's a small door there or not.

Trust me, I've thought of all kinds of scenarios like what you mentioned and came to the same conclusion- if somebody wants in or to cause harm to my house, it won't matter if there is a mail slot or not.

At least now, it's much more difficult to steal my mail if someone were so inclined. And I have a way to receive small packages as well without leaving my porch door unlocked whenever I'm expecting a delivery.

What sparked this project again is I'm going to be out of town all next week for my job and usually have my mail service stopped. With this, I won't have to do that any more.

Since you have an enclosed lockable front porch, that's a nice solution and well done. Likely in your part of KS, it's low risk for houdlems messing with the package slot. Yours could be more secure if package dropped into another box with trap door lid that people from outside couldn't use a long shepherd's hook to "retrieve" your delivered package.

Some high-end homes have secure steel enclosure built into the concrete porch that is self locking once the delivery guy puts package in there. Some day I'd like to rent concrete saw and build such a thing in my porch. The problem is always "how big is big enough" to make that sucker. Push button combination on the enclosure would allow multiple deliveries if you had informed delivery company ahead of time.

Exactly. The town I'm in is relatively safe- stuff can happen anywhere, but generally, things like were mentioned above don't happen here.

Good idea on the trap door box. I might have to cut a hole in the porch floor and mount a box to the bottom between the joists. [emoji3]

Easy convenience is always a good thing, but I'd be more concerned with random property damage than theft. It's been known for vandals to insert your garden hose through any exterior opening and then turn the water on in your absence as a prank.
Nothing is completely perfect, but the use of a large post office box works for us.
