Large positionable lamp?

Has anyone ever seen or made a lamp on a positionable arm? I'm thinking something like the classic goosneck lamp, but larger. It would come down from a wall or ceiling and you could position it to light awkward spaces instead of holding a flashlight. Does such a device exist?

Something like this but bigger and permanently mounted to a wall/ceiling.

No. The length would make it unfeasible due to torque. What about a dock light on the wall? Or a stand light and a cord reel? Or a regular trouble light? :)

First thing that popped into my head was the light at the dentists office. That thing is huge and hurts my eyes. Seems like it articulated pretty easily.

Those are all quite small. I'm looking for something that could work coming out from a wall to a work area pretty far away (6-10 feet say).

I have been looking for something similar to use under the lift. The best I could find was 60" arm.

Or similar (40" arm):

If you are looking for more of task lighting, rather than a whole area, I seem to recall seeing an adjustable neck LED that could clamp in various areas, but I can't find it now. But that is more of a portable than fixed application. For task lighting I generally use a head lamp.

Edit: ohhh, 90"!

See if you can fine a medical equipment reseller.
Both dentists and hospital ORs use them.
They are bright.

it's an interesting idea. do you like or think they'd work well in a garage? my guess is yes. i do happen to know a reseller that might be able to hook me up. some of that stuff can get pretty expensive though...

If you're talking about something to use under a lift, concentrate your search for medical exam lights to the ones on wheels so you can roll it under the car, point it wherever you like, and roll it back in the corner when you're done...

A dental light is what I used. They are bright, but the beam is very focused, so it's better as a task light than a flood. Arm is counterbalanced and the light head can rotate enough to actually point up at the ceiling. They can be found on auction for about $50 if you are patient. Bulbs are around $8. I now have 3 with one over the main bench (shown), one going by my lathe soon, and a spare for who knows what someday. LED dental lights are now available so you may see the old type becoming plentiful (read cheap) as the offices do upgrades.

Here's a couple of pictures during construction of the back wall so you can see the reach and how I mounted it.

More details can be found in my ASYLUM build thread (link in sig line). The index will lead you to posts dealing with the dental lights.

Found a few on ebay, but too much money. 300+ is too much IMO.

I'm selling a bunch of these on CL right now.

2' and 4' versions.

They are fairly flexible, and hold position well.

I also thought of the dentist's office. Maybe a company supplying them can refer you to finding a used light. My dentist changed his lights recently so maybe a conversation with your dentist can yield a light from him or a friend. Or wait till the dentist steps out of the room...........
