So I'm looking to get a pair of pilers to remove this kind of retaining ring, typically found on transmissions, etc.

Anybody have any suggestions of what to get?

After doing two of them, I managed to find a way to get them of in ~5 minutes with a pair of snap ring pilers and a rounded pick, but the right tool for the job ... the right tool for the job ... :willy_nil

Check out Kastar, (Lang)....they make snap ring pliers that the "truck tool" companies rebrand...not positive, but I think they make c-clip pliers as well...

They are external fasteners. They pop onto the shaft to hold the axle in place by the bearings.

Just wondering, how large is large. There are retaining ring pliers or other removal devices for some incredibly large retaing rings.

Two to 3 inches in diameter?

I come from a Machining background where most of my "clips" of any kind are typically much smaller then I saw in these two transmissions. ;)

If you don't find what you need PM me. I have a set from 35 years back. Don't know COO, but bought them for Muncie and Borg Warner work exclusively. Not in the garage right now.

You'll have better luck searching for "lock ring" pliers. Many companies make them. Epstein's have 3 different ones from Wilde on their site for cheap. I believe Wilde is the oem for some of the truck brands for this particular plier. Stride makes the largest selection: as seen here. I'm on month number 3 waiting for mine to arrive from Germany from NWS.

Dimitri;
i hate those POS snap rings.....

pop pop;
nailed it, they are on Muncie transmission output shafts:thumbup:

the SnapOn SRP1B, looks like what you want.....there are serrations on the tips to catch the points on the snap ring
this version has 90Deg tips, my old ones are straight

i drilled dimples in the tips to really catch the tips of the snap rings

you should try and remove the ones in the hub of an MV Agusta motorcycle......the angles are opposite, so there is only 1 point:dunno:

i just love engineers:willy_nil

Lisle, K&D, Mil-Bar, OTC might be other sources
