What is a decent set from around 1.5" to 3"? 3/4" drive.

I have a bunch of mismatched stuff, but often seems it's a scramble to find a socket as of course it's an in betweener.
Have 1.875" and 2.5", so knew it was between that.

Local store has Proto, but they are around $100 a socket. I don't use them enough to warrant dropping a couple grand.
Somehow the nut measure about 2.3", but the 2.125", 2.1875" and 2.25" I bought were all too big. Course they closed 15 mins ago.

Probably metric as it's a Magma Steyr axle, but at those sizes, inch usually is close enough.

HJE has reasonable priced Wright’s individually, but finding them can be a lesson in patience, their search sux. Shipping can get pricey, so beware. ****, I wasn’t looking at in stock qty, one is 0 in stock.

This link is FUBAR, might need to ask for help

ere is a metric set

And a smallish SAE set

Bigger sizes

Less dense set, non impact (acme has it at 800, probably free shipping, but maybe not to you)

They have 1” and 1-1/2” drive sockets too.

So where is your vernier caliper?
Decades ago, I bought an off-shore inexpensive set of 3/4" drive sockets and drivers. All but a very few broke on the first use. One time a larger socket shattered and I had to go to first aid to get my hand bandaged. If I were just starting out and with what I know now, I would buy only the main brands.
The shop where I worked supplied a few of the large sockets from SnapOn, Mack, Challenger, Hazet and other I do not remember. Some of these sockets were/are more than a half century old. They survived almost daily heavy use and survived.

I would look at Sunex. I don't know if they make much above 2", but they can get you partway to 3". Still, even Sunex isn't going to be cheap in large sizes.

Any size over 2” I will get out my 1” drive tools. If something that size is really tight as it should be your pushing the limits for 3/4” handles. I would feel better on the end of a 6’ pipe on a 1” dr. handle than a 3/4”
Adapter. Don't always have room for a 1" impact. 3/4" is much smaller. I could go either way, as I have a mix of 3/4" and 1" drive.

Not interested in spending that kind of money on something I don't use often.

Said that in first post.

Caliper. Apparently it's the "circle" that's formed between the highs and lows of the hex.
That's not right. Both metric and SAE are across the flats.

So it's a 2.25" ,across the flats that should be a 58mm or so. So for 2.25 is too small I would look at a 60 mm across the flats

Cheap is one word I try to leave out. I am old enough to remember when cheap meant poor quality. in 2024, cheap has been smoothed over to include lower priced. While I have a very few "cheap" tools I never intended to use any of them in main-line service. I get great pleasure in repurposing cheap tools. I toss them in recycling when I am done with them.
One example is a very large adjustable Crescent style wrench. It was about 20 bucks. The name on the tool put me off. So, I clamped it in my mill and took the name off. That was the first. Second event, I removed the knurled nut adjuster. It slopped around on the shaft and could not hold a setting. I drilled out the nut and made a light press fit brass bushing for the nut. I drilled the brass insert to fit the shaft. I put the wrench together after an hour on the machinery and It worked perfectly. Allowing a nominal amount for my time and machine use, I could have bought a real Crescent Wrench. I think a real squirrel might have less trouble holding onto its nuts than this POS did in original form. The wrench works great, now.

A good tool to have in a guys arsenal is a digital caliper. You measure across the flat.Mine, you push the button, goes back and forth, metric, sae and in thousandth. Very easy, convenient, accurate.1 inch tools will of course cost more, but you are getting up in size and you might have to add a pipe to the breaking bar.Remember to be careful with the pipe.Safety doesn't cost,it pays

There's no flats on a 12 pt
Color me confused, can you send a pic? I always thought 12 pt nut flats were just 1/2ish the size of a 6pt nut.

Edit: color me stupid, I could have googled, which explains your statement.

But that STILL also means those 6pt impact sockets I listed above won’t work very well

A few years back I went on eBay and found a really nice set of 3/4” and a set of 1” drive stuff in the Craftsman flavor. I’ve bounced in the end of an 8’ pipe on the end of the 1” breaker bar and 3-1/2” socket a few times and it’s all held up fine. I think I was around that $500 mark for both sets which I thought was reasonable.

big tools:
Imperial-Newton / Imperial-Newton Corp., Centennial, CO / https://www.imperial-newton.com/ / large industrial only - 1 " minimum size on sockets and wrenches /

check your local Craigslist ads. you just never know.

I found a buddy of mine a fairly "complete" set of 3/4" drive sockets with a breaker (mostly Wright) - WWII vintage - for $25 bucks one day a few years back.

YMMV

May be a 2-1/16" socket on a 1-3/4" bolt.
The 2" socket was loose but it worked. Maybe was 1 15/16" or 50mm.

Not sure why the pinion was leaking, truck only has ~90k miles.
